Jean Ping, continues to closely monitor developments in Guinea‐Bissau. In particular, he maintains regular contact with all relevant international actors, notably the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), towards the early restoration of constitutional order in the country.

Addis Ababa, 30 April 2012: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Jean Ping, welcomes the formal acceptance by the Government of the Republic of South Sudan of the Roadmap contained in the communique adopted by the 319th meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC), held at ministerial level, in Addis Ababa, on 24 April 2012, including the immediate cessation of hostilities with Sudan, the immediate withdrawal of its police personnel from Abyei and the resumption of negotiations.

Addis Ababa, 2 May 2012– Life in Somalia is slowly returning back to normalcy according to many inhabitants of Mogadishu interviewed by members of the Network of journalists coveringpeace and security issues in Africa (NetPeace).The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) working with the Somali Transitional Federal Government (TFG) forces have pushed the Al Shabaab militia out of most parts of the City, securingmarket centres, the sea port, neighborhoods as well as all the major roads leading in and out of Mogadishu.

Jean Ping, welcomes the new contribution made by the United Kingdom in support of the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). This uncaveated contribution of just over 16 million pounds sterling to the United Nations Trust Fund to AMISOM will be used to reimburse the costs for leasing Contingent Owned Equipment from April 2011 to February 2012, as well as to procure assets required for the provision of further support to the Mission.

Jean Ping, who continues to follow closely the developments in Mali, has learned, with deep concern, of the arrest, in recent days, of several Malian political and military high‐ level personalities.

The Chairperson of the Commission strongly condemns the arbitrary arrest and sequestration of these personalities, in flagrant violation of their most basic rights. He demands the immediate release of the detained personalities and respect for their physical integrity and dignity.

In particular, the African Union notes with alarm the occupation of Heglig by the armed forces of the Republic of South Sudan, and calls for their immediate and unconditional withdrawal

Addis Abeba, le 6 avril2012: Le President de la Commission de I'Union africaine (UA), Jean Ping, exprime le rejet total par I'UA de la declaration faite par un groupe arme, le 'Mouvement National pour la Liberation de I'Azawad (MNLA)', au sujet de la pretendue 'independance' de I'Azawad. II condamne fermement cette annonce, qui est nulle et sans aucune valeur. II appelle toute la communaute internationale a soutenir pleinement cette position de principe de I'Afrique.

Addis Abéba, le 7 avril 2012: Le Président de la Commission de l'Union africaine (UA), Jean Ping, se félicite de la signature, le 6 avril 2012, entre les auteurs du coup d’Etat au Mali et le Médiateur de la Communauté économique des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest (CEDEAO), d’un l'Accord cadre prévoyant une série de mesures en vue du retour à l'ordre constitutionnel au Mali.
