Nigeria relaxes curfew in Islamist stronghold of Maiduguri

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, May 21, 2013 (AFP) - Nigeria on Tuesday relaxed the curfew in Maiduguri, stronghold of the Boko Haram Islamist militant sect, three days after it was imposed, an AFP journalist in the city said.

City residents were able to go outside their homes during the day after the army issued a statement late Monday easing the curfew from 7 am (0600 GMT) until 5 pm (1600 GMT).

Nigeria says it has retaken five Islamist strongholds

ABUJA, May 20, 2013 (AFP) - Nigeria's military said Monday it had re-established control in five remote areas of the northeast where Islamist insurgents had seized territory, as it pressed on with a sweeping offensive against Boko Haram militants.

Several thousand troops were last week deployed across three states in the volatile region, and fighter jets have pounded Boko Haram camps as the military tries to rid the country of "terrorist activities."

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, May 19, 2013 (AFP) - A key city in northeast Nigeria was on lockdown Sunday as the military enforced a 24-hour curfew and blocked supply routes in its sweeping campaign against Islamist insurgents.

The operation against Boko Haram, the group that wants an Islamic state in northern Nigeria, is aimed at retaking territory seized by the militants and ridding the country of "terrorist activities," the military has said.

KANO, Nigeria, May 18, 2013 (AFP) - Nigeria's military on Saturday imposed a 24-hour curfew in parts of a northeastern city as soldiers pressed on with a campaign against Boko Haram Islamists that has sent people fleeing from their homes.

Nigeria launched the sweeping operation this week, deploying thousands of troops across three states where President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency after the Islamists seized territory and chased out the government.

KANO, Nigeria, May 17, 2013 (AFP) - Nigeria's military on Friday attacked Boko Haram Islamist strongholds across the northeast, launching air strikes on insurgent camp with dozens of militants killed in the fighting, the military said.

Several thousand soldiers have spread across three northeastern states where President Goodluck Jonathan imposed a state of emergency, saying Boko Haram had seized territory and declared war on the government.

Nigeria set for air strikes against Islamists

KANO, Nigeria, May 16, 2013 (AFP) - Nigeria's military said Thursday that it was ready to launch air strikes against Boko Haram Islamists as several thousand troops moved to the remote northeast to retake territory seized by the insurgents.

"The entire Nigerian military is involved in this operation, including the air force," defence spokesman Brigadier General Chris Olukolade told AFP.

"Definitely, air strikes will be used when necessary," he said.

ABUJA, May 15, 2013 (AFP) - Nigeria's military on Wednesday announced the "massive"deployment of troops to its restive northeast, after the president declared a state of emergency in areas where Islamist insurgents have seized territory.

A separate military source speaking on condition of anonymity told AFP that fighter jets would also be deployed to the region, raising the possibility that Nigeria could carry out air strikes within its own territory.

Nigeria president calls 'state of emergency' in three states

ABUJA, Nigeria, May 14, 2013 (AFP) - Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday imposed a "state of emergency" in three states menaced by Islamist group Boko Haram, saying the level of violence called for "extraordinary measures".

The insurgents, who say they are fighting to create an Islamic state in the north, have carried out scores of attacks since 2009 but Jonathan said the violence can no longer be treated as "militancy or criminality".

Nigeria holds emergency talks on spate of deadly violence

ABUJA, May 10, 2013 (AFP) - Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday held emergency talks with his security chiefs on a recent spate of deadly violence in the country which has left some 350 dead in less than a month, in mostly religious clashes.

"It is an emergency security meeting at the instance of Mr President... because of insecurity and loss of lives," Police Affairs Minister Caleb Olubolade told journalists.

Gunmen from Nigeria cult kill 30 police in ambush

KANO, Nigeria, May 09, 2013 (AFP) - Gunmen from a shadowy cult ambushed a group of police officers in central Nigeria, killing 30 of them and then setting fire to their bodies, police and officials said Thursday.

The Ombatse pagan movement, which says it is committed to purging social vices, has existed in Nasarawa state for years but has grown increasingly aggressive in recent months, including a campaign of forced conversions targeting both Christians and Muslims, officials said.

Nigerian president slams fresh attacks, warns insurgents

ABUJA, May 08, 2013 (AFP) - Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday hit out at gunmen he called "armed terrorists" who launched attacks on military barracks, a prison and police stations in Bama town in which 55 people were killed.

A statement released by his office in Abuja said Jonathan warned that his government's consideration of dialogue with insurgents should not be seen as a sign of weakness.

Nigerian Islamists attack town, kill 55: army

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, May 07, 2013 (AFP) - Nigerian gunmen on Tuesday launched coordinated attacks on military barracks, a prison and police stations in the northeastern town of Bama, killing 55 people and springing 105 inmates, the army said.

"Heavily armed Boko Haram terrorists" launched the attacks around 5:00 am (0400 GMT), said Musa Sagir, the military spokesman in nearby Maiduguri, the Islamist group's cradle and stronghold.

"Some of the gunmen attacked the military barracks but they were repelled," he said.

Gunmen kill 10 in Nigerian attacks: police

KANO, Nigeria, May 05, 2013 (AFP) - A group of gunmen Sunday stormed a village in northeast Nigeria on the border with Cameroon killing 10 residents in attacks on a church and a market, police said.

The gunmen opened fire on a market square in Njilang village in Adamawa state, killing six people before storming a local church in the same village where they killed four worshippers, Mohammed Ibrahim, the state police spokesman, told AFP.

KANO, Nigeria, May 04, 2013 (AFP) - Thirty-nine people died and 30 were injured in fierce fighting between Christian and Muslim mobs in central Nigeria's Taraba state on Friday, prompting a round-the-clock curfew, police said.

Scores of houses were set ablaze and destroyed during the clashes in the town of Wukari which come amid a surge in religious violence in the west African nation.

25 dead in fresh northern Nigeria violence

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, April 26, 2013 (AFP) - An attack Thursday in restive northern Nigeria where suspected Islamists stormed a police station and stole nearly $60,000 from a bank killed 20 insurgents and five officers, the local police chief said.

"Five policemen and 20 gunmen have been confirmed dead when some Boko Haram Terrorist attacked police formations in Gashua town," the Yobe state police commissioner, Sanusi Rufai, told journalists Friday.

Nigeria's military had previously given a toll of seven dead in Thursday's clash.

ABUJA, April 24, 2013 (AFP) - The head of a panel set up to seek an amnesty deal with Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram voiced confidence Wednesday that members of the insurgent group could be brought into talks.

The statement came as rescue workers deployed to the remote northeastern town of Baga, where the Red Cross says fierce gun battles killed 187 people.

The military has disputed this figure, but the toll makes the Baga violence the deadliest-ever episode in the Boko Haram insurgency, which has killed thousands since 2009.
