QUITO, Sept 7, 2012 (AFP) - Ecuador announced Friday it had shut down 26 aid groups, after a three-year process, for not giving authorities a required report on their mission in the country.

QUITO — There was no sign Sunday that eruptions at Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano would cease any time soon, geologists monitoring the activity said.

Experts with the Geophysical Institute (IG) said that since dawn "powerful roars and explosions sounding like cannon blasts" coming from the volcano could be heard in the area, rattling windows and shaking the ground in nearby towns.

Geologists also reported a columns "with a moderate to high load of ash" rising four kilometers (2.5 miles) above the crater. Ash was reported to have spread to a dozen nearby villages.

Doctors Without Borders warns of Colombia crisis

BOGOTA, Oct 21, 2009 (AFP) - International aid agency Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned Wednesday of a dire humanitarian situation emerging in southwestern Colombia.

Turf wars over vital coca crops in the Ecuador border region of Narino have intensified and more than 12,400 people have been displaced there since early 2009, the Geneva-based organization said.

"In most cases the displaced have received little or no help," an MSF statement said.

Local authorities have been "completely overwhelmed" and MSF is often left as the lone carer, the statement said.

Ecuador volcano relatively calm three days after deadly eruption

QUITO, Aug 20, 2006 (AFP) - The Tungurahua volcano was relatively calm Sunday for a third straight day after a violent eruption left five people dead and buried villages in southern Ecuador, according to the Geophysical Institute.

The 5,029-meter (16,500-foot) volcano appeared to have less accumulated energy and low seismic activity, a sign that it probably ejected most of its gases during Thursday's eruption, the institute said.

"It will probably continue this way until a new rise of magma," it said in its daily report.
