Caribbean, Florida keeping close eye on Hurricane Frances

MIAMI, Aug 30 (AFP) - Florida and several Caribbean islands on Monday were keeping a close eye on Hurricane Frances, a powerful storm packing winds of nearly 200 kilometers (125 miles) per hour.

A hurricane watch was in effect for the British and northern US Virgin Islands, and for the Puerto Rican islands of Culebra and Vieques, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

A hurricane watch means sustained winds of at least 119 kilometers (74 miles) per hour are possible in the area within 36 hours.

Tropical storm Debby becomes hurricane, threatens Puerto Rico

MIAMI, Aug 22 (AFP) - Tropical storm Debby became a hurricane early Tuesday, as it churned over the Leeward Islands toward Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

At 8:00 a.m. local time (1200 GMT), the hurricane was moving through the northern Leeward Islands and threatening the Virgin Islands, packing maximum sustained winds of almost 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour.

A hurricane warning was issued for the north coast of the Dominican Republic, while the government of the Bahamas
