Afghan forces to take over nationwide security: officials

06/15/2013 06:59 GMT

KABUL, June 15, 2013 (AFP) - Afghan security forces will soon take over responsibility for the whole of the country, officials said Saturday, a major milestone as the NATO-led war effort winds down after 12 years of fighting.

The handover of the last 95 districts from NATO to Afghan forces includes many of the most volatile areas of south and east Afghanistan where the Taliban have fought a bloody insurgency against the US-backed government since 2001.

MAZAR-I-SHARIF, June 15, 2013 (AFP) - The guns may be wooden but learning how to conduct a security patrol is a deadly serious business for soldiers at the Camp Shaheen training school in north Afghanistan.

The school teaches its recruits key basic skills such as how to search cars for explosives, man checkpoints, frisk suspects and set up guard posts -- all routine duties designed to tackle a surge in Taliban violence.

Children's circus focuses on fun in war-torn Afghanistan

04/25/2013 02:49 GMT

by Simon Martin

KABUL, April 25, 2013 (AFP) - In a dusty city of grey concrete blast walls where there's not always much to smile about, the organisers of a children's circus try to provide a splash of colour and some moments of joy.

The Kabul-based Mobile Mini-Circus for Children (MMCC) was founded in Afghanistan in 2002, months after the fall of the hardline Taliban Islamic regime which banned music and dance.

Fewer than one million children -- and no girls -- attended school nationwide at the time.
