Typhoons kill 77 in Asia-Pacific, with more devastation to come

HONG KONG, July 10 (AFP) - The death toll from a week of typhoons in Asia and the Pacific reached 77 on Wednesday as Japan, Taiwan and the tiny island of Guam braced for another beating.

At least another 38 people were missing, including 31 mountain climbers sheltering from heavy rains and landslides in Taiwan.

In Japan, a middle-aged fisherman and a 14-year-old student were missing amid heavy rains as Typhoon Chata'an neared its Pacific coast.

Chata'an claimed 40 lives last week when it devastated Chuuk atoll in the Federated States of Micronesia. It then

Typhoon Chata'an intensifying and heading toward Guam and Saipan

AUCKLAND, July 5 (AFP) - Killer Typhoon Chata'an, which has already claimed as many as 39 lives, was intensifying late Thursday and heading toward the US territory of Guam and its major military bases, officials said.

Guam, which is home to more than 150,000 people, was placed on Typhoon Condition One -- the highest level -- by the island's Office of Civil Defence late Thursday.

Chata'an -- "rainy" in Guam's Chamorro language -- is heading straight for Rota Island, around 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Guam and part of the US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Typhoon passes over Guam, death toll in Micronesia still climbing

AUCKLAND, July 5 (AFP) - Typhoon Chata'an rolled over the US territory of Guam Friday bringing with it strong winds and heavy rain that shorted the national grid but caused no deaths or casualties.

Civil Defence officials said that 1,600 people were hustled into storm shelters as the deadly storm passed overhead, charting a course north-west toward Japan's Okinawa.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center was forecasting Chata'an to weaken as it moved away from Guam.

At least 37 people were killed when Chata'an pummeled the Micronesian island of Chuuk on Tuesday, with at least another

Death toll rises as twin typhoons ravage Asia

AUCKLAND, July 5 (AFP) - The death toll rose on Friday as atrocious typhoon weather that has wiped out entire families, made thousands homeless and brought havoc to airlines and electricity grids continued to rage across Asia.

Typhoon Rammasun, which has already left thousands of Okinawans without electricity after cutting power lines this week, claimed at least six victims around China's east coast city of Shanghai on Friday.

Five of the dead were killed when a single-room house packed with migrant workers collapsed during the worst of the storm,

Micronesian atoll recovers dead after worst typhoon in a century

POHNPEI, Federated States of Micronesia, July 4 (AFP) - A devastated Pacific atoll was Thursday trying to count its dead and save its injured after a severe typhoon wiped out whole families in rain-charged landslides.

Typhoon Chata'an -- "rainy" in the local language Chamorro -- powered into the vast Chuuk lagoon, west of here, Tuesday and has left at least 31 dead.

But the toll is far from confirmed as the rain and landslides only stopped Thursday morning. The typhoon has intensified and is heading toward the US territory of Guam, where all July
