These are the words of Jan Egeland, the UN undersecretary for humanitarian affairs during the tsunami five years ago. In an interview in the newly released book "With Courage, In Hope - the tsunami five years after" he gives compliments to ACT International for its professional standard, and he ads: "Saving human lives is no place for amateurs".

"My child has stopped talking" one woman says. "I have a boy who is 15 years old. Since the war he has become a bed-wetter. He can't go to the bathroom at night", says another. We are at the Ahli Ali Hospital in the centre of Gaza City. The hospital offers a psychosocial program to women once admitted at the hospital. It is a life saver, one woman says.

At Ahli Ali hospital 20 women are gathered for a three hours work shop. Every one heavily engaged in the discussions.

The earthquake has changed many lives in West Sumatra. They've lost their houses and loved ones. Yusmaida, 43, is one of the earthquake-affected people in Pinjauan in the Sungai Limau sub-district of Padang Pariaman. Before the earthquake, at 7.9 on the Richter scale, hit West Sumatra on 30 September, she lived in a small house with her husband, six children, a son-in-law and three grandchildren. She earned her living running a food stall in a nearby school where her husband worked

A series of earthquakes hit the Karonga district in northern Malawi between 6 December and 12 December 2009. One of the earthquakes registered 5.8 on Richter scale and completely razed many houses. One death was registered and more than 16 people were seriously injured and admitted to government hospitals. Many public institutions have been closed because of cracks and instability in buildings that has left them life-threatening if occupied. So far 16,512 people have been affected. At the same time the districts of Chikwawa and Thyolo in southern

ISLAMABAD-Dr. Kashif Islam knows what it cost to respond to the massive medical needs of overlooked Pakistani families displaced by the military conflict in Swat earlier this year.

It was free.

The doctor, a health project officer with Church World Service - Pakistan/Afghanistan, was one of the many humanitarian workers who spent weeks developing and sending proposals to international donors to support the millions of people caught up in the world's fastest and largest human displacement in a decade.

Yet as proposals were sent to overseas

ISLAMABAD-For vulnerable Pakistanis, lack of access to basic information on HIV is almost an epidemic in itself. But this epidemic spreads by misinformation and feeds on poverty, increased insecurity, a bias against women's rights and the taboo of discussing sexual health publicly.

"Given Pakistan's conservative society, there are very few outlets or opportunities that allow for healthy public discussions on HIV," said Beenish Hashwani, HIV coordinator of ACT member Church World Service - Pakistan/Afghanistan.

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - The next time a cyclone hits Myanmar (Burma), the population in 50 villages will know what to do. These people have attended an ACT International "cyclone school", a disaster management programme put in place in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis last year. This programme, implemented by ACT member the Lutheran World Federation in Myanmar (Burma), has given the population the know-how to prevent a new cyclone turning their villages into chaos. They are now prepared to cope with a natural disaster.

Dear Colleagues,

Southern Sudan faces the consequences of more than two decades of civil war which is coupled with an influx of returnees, environmental factors and widespread tribal conflicts. Even after the 2005 peace agreement there is no significant increase of living conditions for people in Southern Sudan. The nutrition situation has even deteriorated due to chronic food insecurity, tribal conflicts, inadequate or lack of proper health services.

Background

Geneva, November 27, 2009 - As the Pakistani military continues its operations against extremist militants in South Waziristan, some 400,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) have registered in the districts of Dera Ismael Khan and Tank, according to UN agencies. However, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) reports that some 128,000 individuals are not eligible for assistance either due to multiple registrations, the validity of identity cards, or their place of origin.

Dear Colleagues,

El Salvador was hit by Hurricane Ida on 8 November with winds and up to 300 mm rainfalls in 6 hours. As a result, a total of 108 landslides, 13 major floods and 12 overflowing rivers were counted in seven of the country fourteen Departments. Floods and landslides completely destroyed 288 homes and damaged 1,835 houses. 37 bridges at least were damaged. Out of a population of 2 million in these seven departments, it is estimated that 75,000 people (15,000 families) have been affected.

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - Floods and landslides in Tamil Nadu have killed 95 since the beginning of this month. The communities desperately need assistance for relief, but an ACT International appeal, issued on November 16th, has not yet been able to attract support for an urgent relief effort by member organizations in India.

Worst affected by the heavy monsoon are Dalit and tribal populations who live in remote, hilly areas that rescue teams were unable to access and relief supplies failed to reach. In some areas, Dalit and tribal men are leaving their villages to work elsewhere,
