Accord trains SADC police officers in mediation

From 22 April to 3 May 2013, the SADC Regional Peacekeeping Training Centre (SADC RPTC) held a Peace Support Operations Course for senior police officers in Harare – Zimbabwe in which ACCORD participated by facilitating key sessions. The course objectives were to prepare 21 SADC Senior police officers in rebuilding national Police capacity in a peacekeeping environment and with due respect for human rights and humanitarian law. The course also aimed to enhance the participants' skills in creating effective partnerships with national counterparts, civil society and international actors.

ACCORD trains South Sudan negotiators in mediation and negotiation

ACCORD's South Sudan Initiative (SSI) has held a Mediation and Negotiation Support Training (MANST) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for South Sudanese government officials and stakeholders who are directly or indirectly involved in the ongoing negotiation processes with Republic of Sudan. The training was held from 24-28 March.

ACCORD contributes to first Malagasy defence dialogue on role of armed forces in state of crisis

ACCORD has participated in, and contributed to, a dialogue on the role of the Malagasy armed forces in a state of crisis, organised by the Madagascar Military School in Antsirabe. The reflection session focused on the long lasting political crisis in that country, since 2009, and brought together local and international civil society, the international community as well as local think tanks and high level civilian and military officials, to discuss and reflect on the role of the defence in a situation of crisis.

Peace processes in Côte d'Ivoire: Democracy and challenges of consolidating peace after the post-electoral crisis

Abstract

The attainment of full democracy remains elusive to even some of the greatest nations in the world.

The West African country of Côte d’Ivoire, which experienced a violent post-electoral crisis (November 2010 to April 2011) within the midst of 19 years of political instability which started in 1993, also seeks to consolidate democratisation. The goal is not impossible to realise, but is dependent on the reconciliation of all stakeholders in the conflict and all sectors of society.

Violence against women and girls - a development issue

ACORD's first CSW57 event on 6 March "Challenging and Preventing Hidden War Crimes" with film screening and panel debate was a smashing success. The event attracted a record attendance of 110 participants (20 men and 90 women) and there were lively discussions.

ACCORD supports implementation of new deal in DRC

ACCORD's Peacebuilding Unit has conducted a 4-day workshop on the implementation of the New Deal in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The New Deal is a new approach in which the international community engages with fragile states to enhance sustainable peacebuilding and statebuilding. The DRC pilots the implementation of the New Deal and the workshop's objectives were to enhance participants understanding of the process, its policies and implementations and also to enhance participants' skills sets on monitoring and evaluation in the implementation of the New Deal.

ACCORD engages with stakeholders for sustainable peacebuilding in the DRC

With the aim to strengthen partnerships and support the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)’s peacebuilding process, ACCORD’s Peacebuilding Unit has undertaken a five-day consultation with key peacebuilding stakeholders. The DRC is one of the Unit’s focus countries and the consultations not only informed the Unit about the peacebuilding process in the DRC, but also enhanced new partnerships and strengthened existing ones.

ACCORD trains Burundian land commision staff and partners in resolving land disputes

Land disputes remain a critical challenge in Burundi, a country that is still dealing with the effects of large-scale population displacement from the civil war. Land is also scarce, exacerbated by high population density and heavy reliance on subsistence agriculture. ACCORD has run a conflict management workshop in Burundi’s Kirundo province in ongoing efforts to strengthen the capacity of the national Land Commission members and partners to respond to the pervasive and wide-spread land-related conflict that is still crippling the country.
