Flood devastation in Mozambique enormous, says U.N. official

Maputo (dpa) - The Zambezi River was rising again slowly Wednesday, together with predictions of more rain in neighbouring countries spawning predictions the worst could still come.

''It is a very difficult situation, and the flood-affected area along the Zambezi river in particular, is about one million hectares,'' U.N. Assistant Emergency Relief Coordinator Ross Mountain said after a two-day visit to the country's flood-affected areas.

The top priority now was to evacuate people in areas at risk, Mountain said at a press briefing in the capital

Four hurt in attack on Chechnya aid convoy: Russian officials

MOSCOW, March 7 (AFP) - Four policemen were wounded when a humanitarian convoy carrying aid into Chechnya came under rebel attack, Russian military officials in Grozny said Wednesday.

However no confirmation of the attack was available from independent sources, and Kremlin officials were unable to confirm the report.

Interfax news agency quoted the officials as saying the attack came as a radio-controlled mine exploded under the leading lorry in the convoy Tuesday, and the men were wounded in an exchange of fire that followed.

NATO clashes for first time with Macedonia's Albanian gunmen

PRISTINA, Yugoslavia, March 7 (AFP) - NATO-led peacekeepers in Kosovo (KFOR) clashed for the first time Wednesday with Albanian gunmen fighting near the Macedonia-Kosovo border, a KFOR spokesman said.

KFOR soldiers "injured two armed men after a brief exchange of fire" near the Albanian-populated village of Mijak, in southern Kosovo, KFOR spokesman Richard Heffer told reporters.

Heffer said the rebels had pointed their guns, threatening KFOR soldiers who then opened fire on the gunmen.

Macedonia: Yugoslav Troops May Patrol Demilitarized Zone

Prague, 7 March 2001 (RFE/RL) -- NATO Secretary-General Lord George Robertson says the western alliance is considering allowing Yugoslav troops to help quell ethnic Albanian fighters who have launched attacks in Macedonia. Mandela's wife visits Mozambique flood victims

BEIRA, Mozambique, March 7 (Reuters) - Revered former Mozambican first lady Graca Machel visited aid workers and victims of the Zambezi River flood on Wednesday, urging her countrymen to help themselves to overcome their second natural disaster in a year.

Machel, widow of President Samora Machel and now wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela, toured the flood-stricken valley in an army helicopter.

Un appui de 300 millions de FCFA du gouvernement français

Brazzaville, Congo - Le gouvernement français a mis à la disposition du Congo un montant de 300 millions de FCFA destiné à appuyer le Programme National de Lutte contre la Trypanosomiase (PNLT), a-t-on appris mercredi à Brazzaville.

Vulnerability Zones in India

There are five seismic zones named as I to V as details given below:

Zone V: Covers the areas liable to seismic intensity IX and above on Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. This is the most severe seismic zone and is referred here as Very High Damage Risk Zone.

Zone IV: Gives the area liable to MM VIII. This, zone is second in severity to zone V. This is referred here as High Damage Risk Zone.
