Haiti – Cholera (ECHO Daily Flash of 16 January 2015)

The cholera epidemic, which has affected 725 476 people and caused 8 824 deaths since the beginning of the outbreak in October 2010, continues to be a major public health issue. According to the figures just released by the Ministry of Health, the total number of suspected cholera cases reported in 2014 is 27 434 with 294 fatalities. The total number of hospitalized cases was 20 392. The number of suspected cases is 75% higher than originally expected in the mid-term review of the 2014 Humanitarian Action Plan (i.e. 15 000).

From 8 November to 31 December 2014, the total number of reported suspected cholera cases was 11 324, with 133 fatalities. This is an increase of 20% compared to the same period in 2013.

The epidemic continues to spread. In the first half of 2014, cholera outbreaks were only reported in the northern departments whereas by the end of 2014, the epidemic had spread to nine (out of a total of ten) departments.

The upwards trend is continuing at the beginning of 2015, with the number of cases being 50% higher than during the same period last year.
