KRCS Response to Isiolo LMD Game Camp IDPs On The 3rd Of February 2012

Report

In the past few months, Isiolo district has experienced recurrent unrest as a result of tribal based clashes. The latest unrest in Isiolo started on Tuesday, 31st January 2012 after one of the warring communities attacked another’s village which resulted in heavy exchange of fire and the death of one person, a revenge mission took place the following day which resulted in the death of one more person. On 2nd February 2012, one of the communities carried out a public demonstration in the streets of Isiolo which turned violent. One woman was burnt alive while a man was stoned to death. These incidents have heightened the levels of tension in this area of Isiolo resulting in IDP camps in a number of places including the LMD Game camp situated 6km from the town centre.

The KWS camp had approximately 235 households of IDPs from one of the affected communities, majority of who are women and children. KRCS found out that the immediate need was food because of restricted movement hence they cannot access their animals and markets, NFIs were also noted as a need since these families houses were burnt and in the rush to get to safety they left behind their belongings.

However, the KRCS team that carried out the assessment was faced with one major challenge of being threatened by one of the communities who did not want the IDPs to be given any support; therefore a dissemination session was carried out to both communities explaining our mandate as Red Cross and our need to help the vulnerable without discrimination.

After the talks, these communities allowed KRCS access to the camp and also requested the organization for assistance as they also had a number of displaced and affected people. KRCS purchased the following food items for distribution to these IDPs.

1.55 (90kg) sacks of Maize

2.11(90kg) sacks of Beans

3.12(20litre) jerry cans of vegetable oil

4.300packets of 200gms of Salt

Distribution started at 4.30pm 3rd February 2012, where each household was given the following rations of foods; 1.20kgs of Maize 2.4kgs of Beans
