I HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES
• Bay, Bakool and Lower Shabelle regions of Somalia were this week reclassified from
“Famine/Humanitarian Catastrophe” to “Humanitarian Emergency”. Humanitarian needs however
still persist, with 250,000 out of a previous 750,000 Somalis still at risk of starvation.
• Heavy rains and insecurity continue to impede humanitarian access to both drought- and
conflict-affected people in north-eastern Kenya, Dollo Ado in Ethiopia and Juba in Somalia.
• Approximately 10,000 out of an estimated 27,000 refugees living in Ifo 2 East Camp in Kenya
have been displaced by floods following heavy rains during the past month.
• WHO has confirmed cases of Acute Watery Diarrhoea/cholera in the Dadaab refugee camps in
Kenya, in Burhakaba, Mogadishu and Qhansadheere in Somalia and Obok region in Djibouti.
• A batch of Unimix, a cereal blend donated to drought-affected children across the country, was
found to be contaminated with aflatoxin.
