Highlights

  • WFP assisted 4.2 million people since the beginning of the year. This is the highest number of people served by WFP in South Sudan. In July alone, WFP served 2.9 million people.
  • As a response to growing food insecurity in Greater Mvolo region, WFP is scaling up its assistance to reach total of 69,500 people.

Food and Nutrition Assistance

  • In July, WFP assisted a total of 2.9 million people with 28,400mt of food across South Sudan. Out of these, 1.7 million people were served in hard-to- reach areas through the integrated rapid response mechanism (IRRM). This is the third consecutive month WFP surpassed its highest registered number of people assisted in the country since independence in 2011. WFP provides assistance through general food distributions (GFD), prevention and treatment of malnutrition to children under the age of five and nursing mothers, school meals programmes and food assistance for assets (FFA) activities. Since the beginning of the year, WFP has served a total of 4.2 million people, exceeding its support to 4 million people reached in 2016.
  • As a response to growing food insecurity in Greater Mvolo region in Western Equatoria State, WFP is scaling up its assistance to reach a total of 69,500 people in the area through general food distributions.
  • WFP and its partner World Vision successfully completed the pilot Juba Urban Cash Programme. The programme which includes a training component, targeted 7,000 households (42,000 people). The initial screening and selection exercise to identify the most food insecure households for the second phase of the intervention to start in the third quarter of 2017 is currently ongoing. So far, 14,748 households (88,488 people) have been identified.
  • Currently, there are 6 integrated rapid response missions teams deployed in Unity, Jonglei and Upper Nile states, providing life-saving food and nutrition assistance to about 117,799 people, including 19,426 children under the age of 5. WFP plans to deploy an additional 35 missions in the coming six weeks, assisting approximately 724,660 people.
  • Over the past week, IRRM teams have completed distributions in Leer, Thonyor, Padeah, Din Din, Taam, Koch, and Bieh in Unity State as well as in Ngueny, Dome and Ying in Upper Nile State. Deliveries and distributions are currently ongoing in Mayendit, Dablual, Thaker, Rubkuay, and Mayom in Unity State, and Jiech in Jonglei State.
