Burundi: ONUB loses staff in two road accidents

Bujumbura, Burundi - The United Nations Operation in Burundi (ONUB) has lost 4 (four) soldiers of the Mozambican Contingent in a road accident.

The accident occurred on the night of Tuesday, 22 November 2005, at about 10:30 p.m. on Boulevard du Premier Novembre, in Central Bujumbura, when a United Nations vehicle carrying the Mozambican soldiers hit a lorry parked on the roadside. Four soldiers died on the spot while two others sustained injuries. The wounded soldiers have been admitted at the Pakistani hospital and are in stable condition. No civilian died in the accident.

On the previous day, another traffic accident had occurred on the airport road involving a UN vehicle transporting Nepalese soldiers. Two Burundian civilians died while four Nepalese soldiers were wounded in the accident.

ONUB is greatly saddened by this loss of human lives and extends its deep sympathy to the Mozambican Contingent and the bereaved Burundian families.
