Madagascar: Dahalo Attack Displaces People in the South, Situation Update - 21 June 2012

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

  • In addition to the 6 dead security force personnel initially identified, dahalo attacks have left an additional 11 people dead in the village of Ilambohazo, 8 of them wearing military uniform. Another 4 security force personnel are still missing.

  • According to data validated in collaboration with the Malagasy Red Cross Society, 896 people (244 families) that were displaced from the threatened areas and are being hosted by relatives in Taolagnaro city (Fort Dauphin) are in a vulnerable situation. These figures include 129 children under 5 years of age and 19 under 12 months.

  • The Prime Minister visited some affected communes and Taolagnaro city over the weekend. The Government will continue to seek a peaceful solution and force will only be used as last resort.

  • The Government distributed 3 tons of rice to those displaced to Taolagnaro city on 17 June 2012.

  • In support of the local authorities, the UN system will provide a moderate response to assist the most vulnerable people for a very limited period.

  • An inter-cluster coordination meeting was held to develop possible scenarios and agree on an adequate intervention for each scenario.
