India: Mapping Inundation extent for Bihar State using ESA Sentinel-1 Satellite Data (16 August 2017)

North-eastern India, southern Nepal and Bangladesh received heavy rainfall during the last few Legend days, which caused widespread flood claiming 160 human lives and displacing millions of people from their homes.

Indian state of Bihar, which receives most of the flood waters from rivers in upstream Nepal is also seriously affected in the ongoing disaster event. Four districts located along the Indian-Nepal border in Bihar Kishanganj, Araria, Purnea and Katihar districts are under high inundation affecting nearly one million people. Flood inundation and damages are also reported in other districts Darbhanga, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Madhepura, Saharsa, Supaul as well as East and West Champaran.

District wise satellite estimated flood extent - Araria816 sq.km, Khagalpur 443 sq.km, Katihar 1118 sq.km, Kishanganj 304 sq.km, Purnia 881 sq.km and Supaul358 sq.km.
