Southern Africa Weekly Report (23 to 29 July 2013)

Botswana:
Government has declared 2013/14 a drought year following an assessment. The food insecure rural population is estimated at 372,479 (49% of the rural population), 18.4% of the total population .
Government is planning to undertake a number of interventions.

Madagascar:
Protests marked the previous week, during which a presidential candidate was arrested and put in custody.
The 31 July 2013 deadline of the International Contact Group (ICG) for the three controversial candidates to withdraw from the planned elections looms.
The Government has procured 25,000 liters of pesticides to conduct ground interventions against locust infestations, which is part of pre-campaign interventions carried out by the National Centre against locust (CNA).
