The images of Lake Ab-i-Istada, between Kabul
and Kandahar, appear to show evidence of the drought affecting southern
Afghanistan. The lake (centred on 32.5N, 67.9E), seen as dark blue, clearly
shows a dramatic decrease in size in August and October this year, compared
with images from the same months in 1999. The green colouring indicates
vegetation within the semi-arid landscape. Images are supplied by the USGS
Earth Explorer archive. A locator map is shown underlying the images.
