Nation addresses climate change, natural resource, environment issues

VGP – At the end of its 7th session, the 11th Party Central Committee approved a resolution on responding to climate change, managing natural resources and protecting the environment.

By 2020, Viet Nam will generally be able to actively adapt to climate change, prevent natural disasters, reduce greenhouse gas emission, exploit and use natural resources more appropriately, effectively and sustainably, while controlling the environmental pollution and bio-diversity reduction to ensure the quality of the living environment, maintain the ecological balance towards a green economy.

Working in partnership to build capacity and deliver better programmes

Organizational development is crucial for National Societies to deliver effective programmes and projects. In order to expand the breadth, depth and quality of its services to millions of Vietnamese, the Vietnam Red Cross Society is working to build its capacity to be a strong and effective National Society.

As set out in the IFRC’s Strategy 2020, capacity building is one of the Vietnam Red Cross Society’s strategic priorities and various partner National Societies, including the American Red Cross, are supporting the Vietnam Red Cross Society to implement this.

Danh (11) speaks for children with disabilities at United Nations

When the 11-year-old Tran Cong Danh started to participated in a Malteser International project at his home village in Vietnam, he showed a keen interest in advocating for the right of persons with disabilities to be protected from disasters. So Malteser International invited Danh to Geneva, to speak at the UN's Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, which took place from 19 to 23 May.

Strengthening disaster preparedness for children

Save the Children and Prudence Fund in Vietnam recently launched a project worth £ 132,000 to reduce disaster risk for people in two provinces of Tien Giang and Dong Thap. Around 3,500 children and 14,000 community members in high disaster risk areas will be able to receive training in lifesaving skills and knowledge about preparing for disasters.

Disaster Prevention: Strengthening international cooperation

In the framework of the National Strategy for Natural disaster Prevention and Mitigation (PTGNTT) in 2020, Vietnam and the Philippines have signed a Joint Declaration and Framework Program on response to oil spills in the Gulf of Thailand as well as participation in the implementation plan on the oil spill response to help strengthen the capacity, resources management, disaster response at all levels, sectors and communities.

Task to customize coastal zone hazard reduction curriculum begins for Vietnam

HANOI, Vietnam – With one of the longest continuous coastlines in the world, Vietnam is at risk of a wide-range of coastal hazards. From tropical cyclones to tsunamis, coastal communities require more disaster preparedness than ever as the country is experiencing adverse effects of climate change.

To achieve more resilient coastal communities, there is a need to build capacity at national and local levels on how to reduce disaster risks. ADPC is currently working to customize training curriculum to meet the needs of the most vulnerable to such hazards.

The people forced into a deadly business

Scrap metal collection can be a lucrative activity in Vietnam. It is also an extremely dangerous one.
Tran Van Dieu lives in Tan Duc 1, in a mountainous area of Quang Binh province. People here survive on farming and forestry, but farmland is limited and poverty is widespread, so, using detectors they make themselves, some villagers hunt for metal to sell to scrapyards.

Normally what they find is harmless, but there’s always the risk it could be a deadly bomb.

Vietnam – Severe Weather (ECHO Daily Flash, 26/04/2013)

Strong winds and heavy rain on 23/24 April hit the provinces of Tuyen Quang and Lao Cai, northern Vietnam, as well as the province of Ha Tinh, central Vietnam.

According to local media, as of 25 April, in Ha Tinh, there have been 1 death and 2 injuries attributed to the severe weather, and 1000 houses and 100 hectares of crop damaged.

As of 26 April, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment reports 5 houses collapsed and over 600 buildings and hundreds of hectares of crops damaged in Lao Cai province

Natural disasters cost 1.48% of GDP

VGP – Viet Nam lost a total of VND 74 trillion to natural disasters in the 2008-2012 period, up over VND19.3 trillion from the previous five years.

Property losses caused by natural calamities averagely accounted for 1.48% of GDP per year. The figure was 2.47% in 2009 and 0.94% in 2011.

The loss of lives has dropped sharply over the past years. However, material costs from natural disasters were on the rise, said a member of the National Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention.

War-era grenade kills two Vietnamese children

HANOI, April 17, 2013 (AFP) - Two children were killed and six others seriously injured after a grenade left over from the Vietnam War exploded while they were playing with it, police said Wednesday.

The children, all 11-year-old classmates, were walking home from school in southern Dak Nong province on Tuesday when they discovered the shell, believed to be from a US-made M79 grenade launcher, a police officer told AFP.

Clearing landmines, bringing smiles

Hoang Thi Hai Ly has been working as a deminer for the last 12 of her 43 years, and knows as well as anyone the damage that landmines cause.

Her family lives in Charlie One hill, which had been an American military base in the Gio Linh district of Quang Tri province during the Vietnam War. Here, she shared a small one-room house with her sick husband, their year-old child, her father and her brother's family. It was the only house in the area and it was surrounded by thousands of mines and cluster munitions.

Boosting bomb and mine clearance cooperation

VGP - Deputy PM Nguyen Thien Nhan called upon the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) improve the capacity for social activists and implement research programmes and apply advanced measures to assist bomb and mine victims.

Deputy PM Nhan made the calling yesterday in Ha Noi while receiving Ambassador Stephan Husy, GICHD Director.

The host leader suggested the center continue to help victims of bombs and mines in Viet Nam so that they can better integrate into society.

World Bank surveys challenges of climate change in Ben Tre Province

On 16 March, leaders of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), World Bank (WB) in Vietnam and the Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee have made a survey on prevention of climate change in Ben Tre province. Ms. Victoria Kwakwa, Director of World Bank in Vietnam said, after the survey with the delegates of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee, she had seen the achievements as well as challenges of the province in the fight against climate change and promised to support for this work.

Practice Makes Prepared for Vietnam Communities

Vietnam is constantly barraged by cyclones and dangerous floods, with an average of 160 natural disasters occurring a year, and a joint training program initiated by the American Red Cross is teaching residents to be much better prepared.

In one training, an elderly woman holds tightly to a rope in the rain, while a Vietnam Red Cross volunteer leads her to safety. Another woman, screaming for her missing son, holds up the line of those evacuating, but the Emergency Response Team members are trained to handle this.

Forging partnerships to combat rise in hand, foot and mouth disease infections

Since 2011, Viet Nam has been facing an unprecedented rise in hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) infections. A common viral illness spread through bodily contact and poor hygiene, HFMD typically affects infants and children under the age of five years, particularly those under three. Even though the disease is known for causing mild illness in most cases, a sudden increase in 2011 saw infections rise to about 112,300. A total of 169 died and in major cities hospitals were overwhelmed.
