IFAD loan of US$3 million to revive small-scale agriculture in Seychelles

Rome, 22 May 2013 – The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will provide a US$3 million loan to the Republic of Seychelles to help revive the agriculture sector, strengthen small-scale artisanal fisheries and promote rural microenterprises on the islands of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue.
The financing agreement for the Competitive Local Innovations for Small-scale Agriculture Project was signed today by Steve Dave Carl Fanny, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Trade and Investment of the Republic of Seychelles, and Kanayo F. Nwanze, President of IFAD.

CHF 106,551 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on to support the Red Cross Society of Seychelles for a period of three months in delivering assistance to some 3,000 beneficiaries. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

Areas of Standing Water, Mahe Island, Seychelles (as of 7 Mar 2013)

This map illustrates satellite-detected areas of standing water observed on Mahe Island, Seychelles, in 12 separate GeoEye-1 images collected on 5 February, 13 February, and 16 February 2013. Though these images were very cloudy UNITAR/UNOSAT reviewed them all for indications of standing water and also produced a cumulative cloud mask to indicate which portions of the island were completely cloud obscured. A total of 28 separate standing water bodies were identified, totalling 41,025 square meters and averaging 1,465 square meters in size.

February, 5, 2013-- The Government of Abu Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates has today donated 2 million US Dollars to the National Disaster Relief Fund in order to bring assistance to the people in Seychelles who suffered in the course of the flooding disaster last week.

President Visits Flooded Areas of La-Digue

February 1, 2012 -- President James Michel has visited la Digue today in the plateau areas which were flooded during the heavy rainfall of this week. Mr. Michel visited families whose homes are still surrounded by water as well as viewing the roads and areas which are a source of concern for the residents.

Seychelles: Floods (as of 29 Jan 2013) - Location Map

29 Jan 2013 - A state of emergency was declared on 28 Jan after the Seychelles was affected by rare floods and landslides. A total of 106 people were evacuated to temporary shelters. On the main island, 50 houses were destroyed in Mahé.

Southern Africa launches Disaster Risk Reduction Platform

Gaborone, 26 October 2011 – When unexpectedly heavy floods displaced more than a million people in southern Africa in 2007, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) began to meet annually to prepare for future occurrences, culminating in the creation of the SADC Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction this month.

The community’s regional platform was launched as member countries brace for a season of severe storms and floods that are expected to alternate with drought and long dry spells, predicted to continue until March next year.

FAO's response to the tsunami destruction in the Seychelles - Restoring the livelihood of fishers and farmers and rehabilitating the environment

IMPACT

The FAO interventions had considerable impact on the overall economy of the Seychelles and on the lives of the individual beneficiaries.

- Interventions in the fisheries sector enabled many fishers to resume fishing activities thus contributing to the restoration of adequate levels of fish production both for the local and export markets.

- Safety at sea has been enhanced owing to the provision of navigational and life saving equipment.

- Assistance to farmers has led to an increase in vegetable supply in the local market, thus reducing prices

Australian government assistance to the Seychelles tsunami relief effort (Reef and Fisheries Impact Study)

This report provides an assessment of the impact of the December 26 2004 tsunami on fish populations in the Seychelles. It also includes recommendations on the implementation of a coral reef monitoring and management strategy.
The Australian team included expert representatives from CSIRO, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and Reefcare International.

Australia provided technical expertise to:

- formulate a reef monitoring strategy

- develop strategies to rehabilitate damaged coral reefs

- assess impacts to near-shore fisheries.
