25 Saudis killed in heavy rain, floods

RIYADH, May 6 (KUNA) -- Twenty-five people were killed and three still missing due to recent heavy rains and floods in Saudi Arabia, Director General of Civil Defense Saad Al-Tuwaijri said in a statement on Monday.

Al-Tuwaijri said nine of those killed were in Riyadh Region, seven in Al-Taef province, six in Al-Baha, two in Asseer Region, and one in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah Region, while three still missing, two in Al-Baha valleys and one in Hail Region.

Saudi floods death toll rises to 20: civil defence

RIYADH, May 02, 2013 (AFP) - Twenty people have died and four people remain missing in Saudi Arabia after heavy downpours triggered flash floods in the desert kingdom for nearly a week, the civil defence authorities said on Thursday.

People have drowned in several areas of Saudi Arabia, according to a statement by the civil defence quoted by SPA state news agency.

Rescue teams evacuated six villages in the southwestern Bisha province after a sand dam at the valley of Tabala partially collapsed, it said.

Flash floods in Saudi kill 16: civil defence

RIYADH, May 01, 2013 (AFP) - Sixteen people have died and three more are missing in Saudi Arabia after downpours caused flash floods in several areas of the desert kingdom, the civil defence authorities said on Wednesday.

Two others died in flash floods in neighbouring Oman, local media reported, as cloudbursts swept across most Gulf countries.

The official Saudi SPA state news agency quoted a civil defence statement as saying people died in several areas including in the capital Riyadh, Baha in the south, Hail in the north and in the west.

(Riyadh/New York, 30 November 2011) Ending a one-day mission to Saudi Arabia, Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos welcomed the opportunity to work more closely with the Kingdom in regional and international humanitarian affairs.

“Saudi Arabia plays an important role in humanitarian affairs,” said USG Amos in Riyadh. “In addition to contributing generously to crises in Somalia, Pakistan and Haiti, the Kingdom also engages actively in other key humanitarian response mechanisms such as the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).”

Saudi Arabia: Ten dead, three missing in Jeddah floods

RIYADH - Ten people have been killed and three others gone missing in three days of flooding due to heavy rains in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia's civil defence chief said on Friday.

Since the floods began on Wednesday, "the death toll has risen to 10 and three people are still missing," said Saad al-Tuwaijri, quoted by the state news agency SPA.

Emergency services mounted a major rescue operation in Jeddah on Wednesday as water levels rose rapidly in Saudi Arabia's commercial capital where flooding killed 123 people in 2009.

Saudi scrambles rescue teams for Jeddah floods

RIYADH - Saudi emergency services mounted a major rescue operation in Jeddah on Wednesday as water levels rose rapidly in the Red Sea coast commercial capital in which floods killed 123 people in 2009.

King Abdullah ordered the mobilisation of all relevant services "because of the havoc caused by rains and floods in Jeddah and its environs," the official SPA news agency said.

Saudi Arabia: Stop Deporting Somalis to Mogadishu

(New York, December 22, 2010) - The government of Saudi Arabia should immediately stop deporting Somalis to war-torn Mogadishu, Human Rights Watch said today.

Saudi authorities returned at least 150 Somali nationals, many of them children, from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, on December 17, 2010, press reports said. Saudi Arabia had deported an estimated 2,000 Somalis to Mogadishu in June and July, according to the United Nations refugee agency.

Saudi king wants officials charged over floods

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, May 10 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah on Monday ordered that charges be pressed against officials over the deaths of 122 people in flash floods, which sparked a rare media outcry against alleged corruption.

The floods, caused by torrential rain in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah last year, damaged thousands of houses built in dry river beds, and raised questions about the fate of public funds destined for sewage and drainage systems in the city.
