Government opens First Phase of Post-Hurricane Tomas Housing Resettlement Scheme in Mocha, Fond St. Jacques

Wednesday, 19 September 2012 – On Friday 21st September 2012,The Government of St. Lucia (GOSL) will hand over 11 new homes to residents of the Fond St. Jacques area who lost their homes during the passage of Hurricane Tomas in October 2010.

The 11 new homes comprise the Government of St. Lucia (GOSL) funded component of a wider Housing Resettlement Scheme designed to relocate 28 households in the area.

Flood Risk Reduction System Developed For Communities

8 June, 2012 -- Bridgetown, Barbados, (CDEMA) - The member states of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) now have a model flood risk reduction system which can contribute to protecting the lives and property of people at the community level. The system has been developed under the Caribbean Disaster Management Project Phase 2 (CADM2).

In Saint Lucia CADM II was implemented with the Gros Islet Disaster Committee in Corinth.

Ladies and gentlemen, the vulnerability of the Caribbean States necessitates continuous investments in disaster risk reduction capacity and capability building if we are to retard or reverse the epidemic of hazard related losses we have experienced over the last decade. Community learns pre-disaster training can be the difference between life and death

Tuesday, August 30, 2011 — The American Red Cross is working with partner Red Cross societies in countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean to implement community disaster response training and, as one small community in St Lucia discovered, pre-disaster training can be the difference between life and death.

International Medical Corps Implements Women’s Health Emergencies Training in St. Lucia

In keeping with our mission to build local capacity through training, International Medical Corps began conducting Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities in St. Lucia for local medical staff through a generous grant from Hess Corporation (HESS). The most recent CME series focused on Women’s Health Emergencies and was held over four days in late February with more than 150 local health workers in attendance.

WASHINGTON, March 10, 2011 - The World Bank Board of Directors approved today a US$15 million zero-interest credit to help Saint Lucia rehabilitate key infrastructure damaged by the passage of Hurricane Tomas and improve the island's capacity to manage disaster risk.

An estimated 20,000 people will directly benefit from the rehabilitation of damaged public infrastructure, while the entire population will be better prepared to confront future natural disasters.

The Ministry of Health has increased surveillance for infectious disease and has up-scaled vector control activities given the recent trends post Hurricane Tomas.

2. Project Objectives

The project's objective is to support the recovery and reconstruction efforts of the Government of Saint Lucia in the aftermath of Hurricane Tomas. The project activities include: i) strengthening the Government's ability to analyze, assess, and integrate natural hazard and climate change risk reduction into national development policies and decision-making processes; and ii) rehabilitating damaged and vulnerable transport, health, and education infrastructure affected by the passage of Hurricane Tomas.

IMF Executive Board Approves US$8.2 Million in Emergency Assistance for St. Lucia

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) today approved a combined SDR 5.36 million (about US$8.19 million) in emergency assistance for St. Lucia to cope with the economic consequences of Hurricane Tomas. The financial assistance consists of an SDR 3.83 million (about US$5.85 million) disbursement under the IMF's Rapid Credit Facility (RCF), and SDR 1.53 million ( about US$2.34 million) under the Fund's Emergency Natural Disaster Assistance (ENDA).

Saint Lucia: Post Hurricane Tomas agricultural initiative is bearing fruits

Friday 24 December 2010 - In order to help small farmers affected by Hurricane Tomas, the Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), introduced the Post Hurricane Tomas Agricultural Initiative in early November.

Saint Lucia: Canadian Consulate provides update on disaster response efforts

Wednesday 15 December 2010 - The Saint Lucian Consulate in Canada based in Toronto has provided an update with respect to its Hurricane Tomas Disaster Response Efforts. Since the passage of Hurricane Tomas, the Canadian Consulate has been engaged in efforts aimed at mobilizing financial and material support for Saint Lucia. One of the first actions taken by the Consulate was the establishment of a Saint Lucia Disaster Relief Fund. This Fund as of December 14th, 2010 stood at CAD $7,652.74.

Saint Lucia: WASCO Diverting Pipes around Major Slide in Micoud

Wednesday 15 December 2010 - After trying to uncover damaged water mains buried beneath a 4-5 acre landslide in Mahaut, Micoud crews from the Water and Sewerage Company (WASCO) have decided to divert the pipes around the slide so residents can get water. Micoud is one of two major communities that have not seen a supply of water since Hurricane Tomas hit the island on October 30, 2010. Crews were continuing to lay pipes along the network today, Tuesday, December 14, 2010, a process they could not complete earlier due to bad weather and treacherous conditions

Guyana comes to the assistance of Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Thursday, December 2, 2010 - The government of Guyana has decided to give financial assistance to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia as the two countries continue their recovery efforts after the passage of Hurricane Tomas last month.

Reports from Georgetown state that the government will give US$200,000 to the two countries -US$100,000 each.

Saint Lucia: WASCO making tremendous strides in providing communities with water

Tuesday 30 November 2010 - In a post Hurricane Tomas recovery update, the Water and Sewerage Company (WASCO) has revealed that it has been able to partially or fully restore a steady supply of potable water to several communities on the south-western and eastern regions of the country.

WASCO's Communications Consultant Mr Clinton Reynolds says amidst numerous challenges crews have moved to install six portable water tanks in the community of Micoud which has been without pipe-borne water since the passage of Hurricane Tomas one month ago.

Thursday 25 November 2010 - A barge from the neighboring French Territories recently brought in relief items-worth over one hundred thousand Euros-for onward distribution to persons affected by hurricane Tomas.
