School Meals With A Special Ingredient

Andrea Orozco, kindly nicknamed by her students as “Andreíta”, is the one responsible for the lunch time meals at Santa Marta School in the rural community of Guineo, which is located 280 kilometers east of Managua.

Andreíta assumed this position last year when her 5 year old son, Jason, began preschool. Since then she has not once failed to provide daily meals to the 234 students of this primary and preschool.

Plan International and WFP Unite Against Hunger and Malnutrition

The Director of Plan International Michael Diamond and World Food Programme Representative Helmut W. Rauch signed an agreement for technical collaboration on nutrition and food security.

Through this agreement, both organisations will conduct work together on nutrition, education, and support of small farmers and on programmes to benefit the most vulnerable populations.

“We are very excited to make this agreement with WFP, through which we will deepen and expand the impact of the work of both organisations,” says Diamond.

Beefing Up Disaster Response in Nicaragua

MANAGUA, May 3 2013 (IPS) - Nicaragua, which is prone to natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes and flooding, is confronting them with prevention measures and community drills and training in high-risk areas.

The army’s civil defence unit and different government agencies began to put in place a permanent plan for safety, prevention, preparedness and assistance in the most vulnerable areas in 2010, Colonel Néstor Solís, the head of civil defence, told IPS.

Dad-of-four Julio Lopez’s dream of spending more time with his family always used to be dashed by the reality of living in poverty. Or to be more precise, working in it.

The demands of earning a meagre living from a local landowner meant he had to leave home at 5am and wouldn’t return till 7pm most days. Quite simply, he hardly ever got to see wife Amselma and their four sons.

Like many living on the poverty line in rural Nicaragua, Julio had no financial independence or land of his own, even his house was owned by his employer.

FAO recognizes Nicaragua's efforts in the fight against hunger

23 April 2013, Rome - FAO recognizes Nicaragua's great efforts in the fight against hunger, FAO Director-General, José Graziano da Silva told Nicaragua's Foreign Minister Samuel Santos López today. They held a bilateral meeting at FAO headquarters during FAO's governing Council session taking place this week.

Between 1990 and 2010, Nicaragua reduced the prevalence of undernourishment in the country from 55.1% to 20.1%, thus successfully meeting Millennium Development Goal 1, which is to halve the proportion of people suffering from hunger.

  • Affordable consumer prices along with average income and average to near-average production levels in 2012 are likely to maintain Minimal acute food insecurity (Phase 1 IPC 2.0) throughout the consumption year, even with the onset of the normal lean season in May.

  • Coffee rust prevalence is two to three times higher than usual. Labor demand will be significantly reduced in the following harvest (2013/2014).

Nutritionists update their knowledge

The Ministry of Health (MINSA), in coordination with the World Food Programme (WFP), has given technical and scientific updates to fifteen nutrition clinics and health centers in Managua through virtual conferences, delivered by specialists from WFP.

The program of virtual conferences took place between April and December last year, and were a part of the technical assistance activities and strengthening of national capabilities which WFP provided the Nicaraguan Government through MINSA.

1,500 Nicaraguan farmers stay put despite volcano warning

CHInandega, Nicaragua, Dec 26, 2012 (AFP) - Some 1,500 farmers living on the slopes of the San Cristobal volcano refused to leave Wednesday, despite being ordered to evacuate as the volcano spewed gas, sand and ash.

"People have not evacuated because we do not want to go and leave the area abandoned," Maria Pereira told AFP.

Pereira lives in "Grecia 4," a community of about 600 people at the base of the volcano, in the Chinandega department.

PCI trains Nicaraguan government and NGOs in disaster relief and recovery

November 6, 2012 (Managua, Nicaragua) -- PCI Nicaragua was selected to conduct a series of disaster management workshops for Nicaraguan government institutions, as well as a variety of other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in disaster response and humanitarian aid. PCI’s workshops focused on populations living in high risk environments to help them develop rescue and emergency plans, and start the rehabilitation and reconstruction process after a detailed assessment and analysis.
