Red Crescent carried out a winter relief campaign in Kazakhstan

Astana: The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has carried out a winter relief campaign for those affected by a cold wave and heavy snow that hit a number of cities in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

"RCA aid workers have provided relief assistance to a number of families affected by the cold wave in Kazakhstan, Naima Al Muhairi, Acting Deputy Secretary General for Relief and Projects at the RCA, said.

Al Muhairi added the RAC would coordinate with Kazakh official authorities to ensure delivery of assistant to a large number of affected families.

Volunteers in Kazakhstan publicize patients’ medical rights

Selbi Turesheva is passionate about raising awareness of people’s right to health in Kazakhstan.

“Every person may face a time in life when they are in need of medical attention,” she says. “Receiving quality medical care is that person’s human right.”

Turesheva and fellow university student Parvina Kurbanoa became the first volunteers to give their time to Aman-saulyk, an organization that conducts national advocacy campaigns to promote patients’ rights to quality medical care.

Period covered by this update: 26th December 2012 to 14th January 2013.

Summary: CHF 158,584 was initially allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Kazakhstan Red Crescent in delivering immediate assistance to 2,000 beneficiaries. Due to the continuation of the adverse weather conditions and newly arisen needs, however, the National Society has revised its operational plans with a budget increase of CHF 111,586. The revised budget for this operation amounts to a total of CHF 270,170.

President orders emergency relief aid to victims of extreme winter in Kazakhstan

Abu Dhabi, 8 Jan. 2013 (WAM) - In line with the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the follow up of Gen. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority has ordered the dispatch of emergency relief aid to the people affected by the extreme cold wave in Kazakhstan.

Fourth Central Asia Regional Risk Assessment conference kicks off in Almaty (EN/RU)

Almaty, 17 October – Over 30 representatives of regional international organizations and Central Asian Governments gather in Almaty for a two-day Central Asia Regional Risk Assessment (CARRA) conference to agree on specific collective measures that need to be taken in order to be fully prepared for the upcoming winter season. The participants will identify potential needs and gauge the capacities at national and regional levels in the following key areas: information management, vulnerability assessment and early warning.

The map below shows the risk to multinational companies of being complicit in the violation of workers’ rights across Kazakhstan. At the moment, Karagandy province presents the greatest risk, where violations so far this year have included the unresolved death of a labour rights activist in June and a strike over wages at the Annensky copper mine in May. Mangystau province is also a high risk area since the beginning of a protracted strike by oil workers in Zhanaozen in May 2011.

Kazakhstan Floods: DREF operation n° MDRKZ005 Final Report

Summary: CHF 175,704 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 27 February 2012 to support the Kazakhstan Red Crescent Society in delivering assistance to some 4,000 beneficiaries and to replenish disaster preparedness stocks.

Within the framework of the response operation, the Kazakhstan National Society carried out detailed needs assessment and prepared a list of the beneficiaries according to criteria agreed with community leaders, beneficiary representatives and the local authorities.

Blue Skies and Dark Clouds: Kazakhstan and Small Arms

Unlike some of its Central Asian neighbours, Kazakhstan has been spared from civil war and ethnic strife, earning it the reputation of being a pillar of stability in an otherwise volatile region. The country also has a relatively comprehensive set of measures in place to regulate civilian acquisition and possession of small arms, and is an active participant in international small arms processes. Yet several incidents of armed violence with extremist and terrorist undertones that took place in 2011 suggest the country is not immune to the misuse of firearms.
