Small Island Developing States, Increasingly Challenged by Natural Disasters, Discuss Options

GENEVA, 21 May (United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction) — As disaster risk reduction experts met in Geneva this afternoon on strengthening partnerships for small island developing States, there were many calls for inter-island cooperation, as well as adequate financial and technical resources.

Gyan Chandra Acharya, United Nations High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, said that natural disasters were a fact of life in those countries, but their impact should not be.

GENEVA, 21 May (United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction) ‑ The private sector’s potential role in building resilient societies, and especially in repairing vital infrastructure damaged by disasters, was highlighted by several panellists this afternoon at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, which opened here yesterday. Speaking at a plenary session on “Private sector for resilient societies: ingredients for success”, several panellists warned that without such a role the world’s future was endangered.

Preparing for an earthquake in the Kathmandu Valley

In 1934, the fault line than runs beneath the Kathmandu valley slipped. The magnitude 8.4 earthquake that followed destroyed more than 80,000 buildings and claimed 8,500 lives. It was the last earthquake to shake the city of Kathmandu and surrounding valley. Almost 80 years later, UN agencies and the government are determined to be better prepared for the next one.

Private sector pioneers take on resilience challenge

GENEVA, 21 May 2013 - Leading figures from the private sector said today they were ready to "come in from the cold" and play a stronger leading role to reduce disaster risk.

CEO of Titan America, Aris Papadopoulos, praised 'pioneer' business leaders who were championing the cause of resilience, on the opening day of the 4th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva, but warned a long road lay ahead.

The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) is the first multi-country risk pool in the world, and is also the first insurance instrument to successfully develop parametric policies backed by both traditional and capital markets. It is a regional catastrophe fund for Caribbean governments designed to limit the financial impact of devastating hurricanes and earthquakes by quickly providing financial liquidity when a policy is triggered.

Disaster-prone cities call for inclusion

GENEVA, 20 May 2013 -- City mayors and municipal councilors from around the world today called on governments to ensure greater participation of local authorities in decision-making on mainstreaming disaster risk reduction in national policy and regulatory frameworks.

In consultations held a day before the opening of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, participants also stressed the importance of promoting greater public-private cooperation and financial investment in the battle to make cities more resilient to natural disasters and adaptable to climate change.

Flood Risk Management: A Strategic Approach

Floods in the WHO European Region: Health Effects and their Prevention

How flooding affects health

Floods are the most common natural disaster in the WHO European Region, occurring in 50 of the 53 countries in the WHO European Region in the past decade. More frequent, extreme rainfall is projected; it may result in more floods, of greater intensity and various types. Flooding has extensive and significant effects on health, spanning the short and long terms and ranging from drowning and injuries to infectious diseases and mental-health problems.
