UNIDO and OFID partner to help boost food security in rural Ethiopia

Vienna, Austria, June 19, 2013. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is partnering with the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) to help finance a project that will help rural communities in northern Ethiopia adopt modern agro-industrial processing technologies and generate new job opportunities.

OFID is supporting the US$2.5 million project with a US$600,000 grant. The grant agreement was signed in Vienna today by UNIDO Director General, Kandeh K. Yumkella, and OFID Director General, Suleiman Jasir Al-Herbish.

Five Afghan Companies Form Public-Private Alliances with USAID

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN | JUNE 19 – Five Afghan companies signed the first Public-Private Alliances (PPAs) with USAID in Kabul today. These companies have matched USAID funding, reaching a total investment value of more than $4.5 million.

Through its Building Afghanistan by Developing Enterprises (ABADE) program, USAID will assist these firms to expand their businesses and inject additional revenue into the Afghan economy. The alliances are expected to create more than 260 direct and over 2,200 indirect new jobs.

Summary: CHF 158,584 was initially allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Kazakhstan Red Crescent Society in delivering immediate assistance to 2,000 beneficiaries. Due to the continuation of the adverse weather conditions and newly arisen needs, however, the National Society revised its operational plans with a budget increase of CHF 111,586. The revised total budget for this operation amounted to a CHF 270,170.

Germany Contributes €15 Million To WFP Food Assistance For Syrian Refugees

GAZIANTEP – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has received a generous contribution of €15 million (US$20 million) from the Government of Germany that will help provide critical food assistance to tens of thousands of Syrian refugees who fled the fighting in Syria. The United States donates US$ 123m to UNRWA

The United States announced a new contribution of US$ 123 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which will enable the Agency to continue its work serving a population of some five million registered Palestine refugees in the region. This latest donation brings the total U.S. contribution to UNRWA in 2013 to US$ 244.5 million.

US$ 75 million will go towards the General Fund, which supports core activities in education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement and microfinance.

• On 16 June 2013, AFAD - the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency of Government of Turkey - announced that the total number of Syrians registered and accommodated in 20 camps in 10 provinces has increased to 201,091 including 450 Syrians receiving medical treatment in hospitals. AFAD reported that during weekend (14-16 June), 2,396 new arrival Syrians were registered and accommodated in the camps and 1,198 Syrians voluntarily returned to Syria.
