Swift measures to assist flood victims

The National Disaster Management Center (NDMC) in coordination with the District Secretariat Divisions is taking all necessary measures to support those affected by floods.
According to the NDMC situation report almost 37,000 people belonging to over 9,100 families were still being affected by the rainy weather as at yesterday noon.

It said 4,962 people belonging to 1,281 families had been evacuated to safer locations. Gampaha and Colombo districts were the most affected districts by the inclement weather.

Cyclone 'Mahasen' moving North-Western direction

The low pressure condition that was evident close to the Bay of Bengal has developed into a cyclone. Names that have been proposed by the countries in the Asian regions are used when naming cyclonic situations that form in the Arabian Sea and in the Bay of Bengal. This time Sri Lanka was granted the opportunity to name this cyclone and it has been named Mahasen.

Commonwealth Secretariat to provide technical assistance to strengthen Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission

The Commonwealth Secretariat has agreed to provide technical assistance to strengthen the effectiveness and authority of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka. A delegation of Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (HRC) led by its Chair Justice Priyantha R. P. Perera has met with the Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma at the Marlborough House in London Wednesday.

The Sri Lanka HRC group is in London to take part in a Commonwealth roundtable on reconciliation, being held at the Commonwealth Secretariat from 1 to 3 May.

Mine clearing in North almost completed

Ninety-five percent of the Confirmed Hazardous area has been cleared of mines, according to the National Mine Action Center which was established in the Economic Development Ministry after the war. The remaining confirmed hazard area (CHA) is only 96 square kilometers as at the end of March 2013. Most of this area is covered with shrubs and jungle.

The massive pace of demining has helped the Government to resettle all IDPs.

Only 96 sqkms to be de-mined

Only 96 square kilometers of land, out of 2064 square kilometers remain to be de-mined, the National Mine Action Center said. As per the information of the Center, the cleared area is over 95% and most of the remaining areas are covered with shrubs and jungle.

The Mine Action progrramme is still continued by the Government with the support of UNDP, UNICEF, Donor Community, Engineering Bridge of Sri Lankan Army, National and International de-mining organizations.

UN Habitat extends support to housing development in North

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat extends its continuous support to the housing development in North and East.

UN-Habitat is extending its partnership with the European Union (EU), Government of Australia (AusAID) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) to implement the second phase of the housing recovery project for conflict affected families, the Finance Ministry said.

6,000 primary and secondary schools to be developed

Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa has announced the launch of child-friendly schools programme to minimise the competition to admit children to popular schools and also to provide them with a quality education after developing material resources and other facilities in schools.

This is a further step in improving Sri Lanka’s education the level of which the UN’s Human Resources Report has recognized as being among the highest in Asia.

President pledges safe drinking water to rural communities

President Mahinda Rajapakse yesterday said the government has correctly understood the needs of the people in rural areas and promised to provide safe drinking water for the rural communities in the country.

He said the government has given priority to improve the quality of water and sanitation provided to the rural masses and is working on several water supply sanitation projects.

The President made this pledge at a function held to distribute 108 housing units to public at Thuruithurugama in Katukeliyawa, Anuradhapura.
