South Sudan army commits atrocities in Jonglei as aid workers flee

By Caelin Briggs

Bor, South Sudan – It has been a dark week in Jonglei State in eastern South Sudan. On Friday night, the last of the humanitarian workers in Pibor town were evacuated by UN helicopter as South Sudanese forces roamed the dusty streets, attacking civilians and looting anything they could carry.

Aid Inside Syria: Too Little, But Not Too Late

In order to save Syrian lives, donors and aid agencies need to think more creatively about how to secure access to displaced people. Improving delivery and distribution at the Turkish border is one feasible option.

I Am a Refugee, and I Have Rights

I have experienced many challenges living as a refugee in Nairobi for two years. The first challenge is security, which is not guaranteed. I live in Eastleigh, a small neighborhood that has become a Somali enclave. A series of explosions took place here after Kenyan troops entered Somalia.

This caused a reaction among Kenyans, who blamed Somali refugees. Although there is an increased police presence in the area, Somalis are afraid of the police because of the way that they behave towards them.

Syria's First Responders Need Our Help

This post originally appeared at The Hill's Congress Blog.

Two nights ago, my Refugees International colleagues and I paid a visit to a cramped apartment on the Turkish-Syrian border. Dr. Najjar, a Syrian physician, showed us various types of medical equipment he had gathered over the past week. They will be sent into a northern Syria province in the coming days to resupply hospitals and clinics.

Outdated Approach, Misplaced Priorities

Aid actors in DR Congo need to improve aid coordination and ensure that assistance is based on vulnerability rather than status, says Refugees International in a new field report.

Aid must be on the agenda at Burma-Kachin peace talks

This month, the Burmese government and the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) will hold their second round of negotiations so far this year. The long-running Kachin conflict has resulted in more than 100,000 internally displaced people (IDPs), and a permanent cease-fire between the parties is desperately needed. Without it, tens of thousands of civilians will remain cut off from life-saving assistance.

Poor Coordination Obstructs Emergency Response to Gender-Based Violence

The recent increase in displacement due to conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has multiplied the risk of gender-based violence (GBV). At the same time, coordination efforts by the international aid community are failing to address the needs of women and girls. In 2009, United Nations Action on Sexual Violence in Conflict drafted a comprehensive strategy for combating sexual violence in the DRC, which was then adopted by the DRC government.

Congo’s Elderly Act As Caregivers – But Who Will Care for Them?

Life in a displaced persons camp is not easy. Even for the strongest of the strong, surviving in an insecure and inhospitable camp is both physically and emotionally grueling. But for the elderly, disabled, or ill, the demands of camp life can seem insurmountable.

These individuals – especially those without family members to support them – are often the most vulnerable, and their needs are often overlooked.

U.S. Support for Mali: Humanitarian Needs Must be Considered

By Katia Gibergues-Newton, Refugees International Intern The French intervention in Mali has attracted international support primarily because of its regional implications. The fear – shared in the U.S., Europe, and throughout West Africa – is that if left unchecked, Al-Qaeda inspired groups like Ansar Dine and MUJAO could turn northern Mali into a safe haven for terrorist operations across north and western Africa. Indeed, many regard the recent hostage crisis at In Amenas, Algeria, as just the tip of the iceberg.

Aid Providers’ Neglect Sparks Riots in Congo

Goma - Displaced people in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are rioting in the face of dire humanitarian conditions and an inadequate international response. A Refugees International (RI) team now in the DRC found that Congolese living in so-called "spontaneous settlements" have been overlooked by humanitarian actors, with some sites not receiving aid for months at a time. RI urges the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and its partners to address these needs immediately and prevent further unrest.

Kenya’s Plan to Round-Up Refugees Demands U.S. Response

Kenya’s Dadaab refugee camp is the largest of its kind in the world: a sprawling, jam-packed community housing nearly half a million vulnerable Somali refugees. During a visit this week to one section of the camp, known as Kambioos, my Refugees International colleague and I met a young Somali man named Ahmed who had just arrived by bus from Nairobi.

International community is ‘failing the people of Syria’

preview

On the eve of a key meeting of donor counties, a coalition of six international humanitarian agencies has warned that the UN’s record $1.5 billion Syria humanitarian appeal remains only 3% funded, and some of the world’s richest countries have failed to provide sufficient support.

Almost a quarter of the world’s GDP is concentrated in 6 countries: Brazil, Japan, China, South Korea, Russia and Mexico. However these countries are failing the people of Syria with contributions considerably lower than other countries with comparable wealth (see tables below).

Kenyan Plan to Force Refugees Into Camps Leads to Abuse, Violates International Law

Nairobi -- Refugees International (RI) is deeply concerned about Kenya’s recent decision to move 100,000 city-dwelling refugees into camps. This week, RI’s team in Nairobi interviewed refugees who described the fallout of this decision – including violence, harassment, and extortion suffered at the hands of Kenyan security services. RI therefore calls on the Government of Kenya not to pursue this relocation plan, and to ensure that the rights of all refugees are respected.

Prepare for Displacement Crisis in Mali

The French military intervention in Mali is just a few days old, and there is plenty of uncertainty about the operation’s strategy and potential outcomes. But one thing is clear: as this campaign escalates, more civilians are being forced to flee their homes – exacerbating a humanitarian crisis that has plagued Mali for more than a year. Governments and aid agencies in the region must be prepared for the worst and take steps immediately to assist this new wave of displaced Malians.

Peacekeeping in the DRC – Time for a Reality Check

The recent surge of violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, culminating in the fall of the provincial capital of Goma to members of the M23 rebel group, is first and foremost a human tragedy. Though M23 has now withdrawn from the city and agreed to peace talks, 130,000 people remain displaced, with many forced to flee from camp to camp in search of safety.
