Displaced Persons at Risk

At least 140,000 displaced Muslim Rohingya and Buddhist Rakhine are nervously awaiting the beginning of the rainy season, which runs from May/June to October. Some 68,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Rakhine State currently reside in 14 camps and informal settlements on land at serious risk of flooding. Flooding could contaminate water sources and accelerate the spread of water and vector-borne diseases.

European report on development 2013 - Post-2015: global action for an inclusive and sustainable future. Full Report

In a commendable effort to increase accountability, the international community set itself a target date of 2015 to achieve the key objectives of the historic United Nations Millennium Declaration, on which the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are based.

This widely recognised deadline has inevitably attracted considerable debate. As it approaches, there has been much research on whether the targets as set out in the MDGs will be met, along with a parallel discussion on what might succeed them.

‘Mahasen’ cost relatively few lives, but considerable damage

24 hours after ‘Mahasen’ passed it can been seen that even though the worst has been avoided in the number of victims, the impact of the tropical storm could have long-term effects on the living conditions of the people. In Patharghata, the intervention area of Terre des hommes, the teams immediately got to work.

Last Thursday 16th May, at 9.30 a.m., ‘Mahasen’ swept through Bangladesh, killing ten people according to the first reports, injuring hundreds and causing widespread damage throughout the Gulf of Bengal.
