Desert Locust Bulletin No. 415 (April 2013)

The Desert Locust situation remained serious during April in northern Sudan where hopper bands were present near crops along a 1,000 km strech of the Nile River. Swarms could form in May and threaten crops, and a second generation of breeding could take place before the summer or, if early rains fall, adults could move to the summer breeding areas in Sudan. There is also concern in Saudi Arabia where new generation adults could move from the northwest Penninsula, including Yemen, and breed in areas of recent heavy rains.

Rabat warns of 'harmful consequences' from W.Sahara plan

04/16/2013 21:03 GMT

RABAT, April 16, 2013 (AFP) - Morocco on Tuesday warned of "harmful consequences" for regional stability from US-backed plans to broaden the mandate of the UN mission in the disputed Western Sahara to probe human rights abuses.

The initiative, to be decided by the 15-nation Security Council this month, has set off a furious lobbying campaign by Morocco, which annexed the former Spanish colony in 1975 in a move not recognised by the international community.

In World Bank client countries, access to improved water sources increased from 73 percent in 1990 to to 86.4 percent in 2010, and access to improved sanitation from 42 percent to 56.3 percent.

The Desert Locust situation continues to remain serious in the Central Region. Hopper bands and swarms continued to form in the winter breeding areas along both sides of the Red Sea during March. Western Sahara: the world's forgotten refugees – video

Report
Guardian

Located in the sweltering desert of south-west Algeria, the refugee camps of the Saharwi are home to more than 200,000 people, displaced from Western Sahara in 1979 when Morocco annexed the disputed territory in a conflict the world has long since forgotten. A new generation is growing up in the camps – eager to return to their homeland by whatever means, and frustrated by the Polisaro movement's slow dealings with Morocco and the UN.
