AMMAN, April 30 (KUNA) -- A delegation from the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) handed out 10,000 food packages, each weighing 18 kilograms to aid Syrian refugees in Jordan, said a KRCS statement on Tuesday.

The KRCS team distributed today 500 parcels to displaced Syrian families in Jerash, said head of the KRCS delegation Ahmed Al-Fag'an in remarks to KUNA.

The KRCS team will continue to offer aid as part of its humanitarian commitment towards the Syrian people, due to their current security dilemma, he noted.

Nine UN agencies that were close to suspending some underfunded humanitarian programmes have received a combined $275 million from Kuwait.

GENEVA, April 18 (UNHCR) – UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres on Thursday warmly thanked and praised Kuwait after receiving an unprecedented US$110 million cheque from the emirate for its Syria crisis operations.

Speaking at a presentation ceremony in Geneva, the High Commissioner also urged other countries to follow Kuwait's example, which he said had given UNHCR and other UN agencies a "breathing space" at a time when funding is desperately short.

ROME – The United Nations World Food Programme today welcomed a contribution of US$40 million from the government of Kuwait to provide assistance to Syrians in acute need.

“Kuwait has led the way in the region, providing outstanding support for the people of Syria and more than a million refugees who have fled to neighbouring countries,” said WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin. “It costs WFP around US$19 million a week to finance our operation to provide food and voucher assistance. The numbers are growing, so this contribution is very much appreciated,” she said.

State of Kuwait donated a total of USD 68 million to help alleviate suffering of Syrians in and outside their country, as well as the Palestinian refugees in the troubled Arab country.

Kuwait permanent ambassador to the UN Mansour Al-Otaibi said Kuwait, bearing its humanitarian responsibility towards its Arab brethern, donated USD 53 million to UNICEF to help the Syrian children inside the country and Syrian refugees in neighboring nations, while granting USD 15 million for UNRWA to help the Palestinian refugees inside Syria.
