Adaptive capacity map of Southeast Asia in 2005

Adaptive capacity is defined here as a composite index of socio-economic factors (income per capita, literacy, life expectancy, poverty, and inequality), technology, and infrastructure. The data on these elements comes from various sources such as UNDP Human Development Reports and national statistical agencies. Most of the data is for the year 2005 or the most recent available.

The State of The World's Children 2009: Maternal and Newborn Health

Niger has the highest lifetime risk of maternal mortality of any country in the world, 1 in 7. The comparable risk in the developed world is 1 in 8,000. Since 1990, the base year for the Millennium Development Goals, an estimated 10 million women have died from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth, and some 4 million newborns have died each year within the first 28 days of life. Advances in maternal and neonatal health have not matched those of child survival, which registered a 27 per cent reduction in the global under-five mortality rate between 1990 and 2007.

This report is based on a series of 15 international case studies conducted between September and November 2008 under a joint initiative of FAO and the PISCES Energy Research Programme Consortium funded by DFID. The case studies focussed on developing an improved understanding of the linkages between Livelihoods and Small-Scale Bioenergy Initiatives. The study was developed in consultation with the PISCES Consortium Advisory Group (CAG). UNICEF Humanitarian Action Report 2009

The Humanitarian Action Report (HAR) is UNICEF's annual humanitarian funding appeal for children and women affected by protracted emergencies. In 2009, requirements to support UNICEF-assisted emergency response total US$ 1,000,494,205 - a 17 per cent increase compared to 2008. The HAR 2009 includes 36 countries, compared to 39 countries in 2008 with the addition of Myanmar, Tajikistan and Yemen.

Compared to 2008, the Eastern and Southern Africa region has almost doubled its financial needs for protracted emergencies.

Poverty and Poverty Reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa: An Overview of the Issues

This paper has two main objectives. Firstly, we highlight the principal drivers and maintainers of poverty in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) as we see them (building on a holistic approach to defining poverty) and, secondly, we critically discuss selected policies for economic development and poverty reduction.
