Handbook for Repatriation and Reintegration Activities

Child Soldiers Newsletter - No. 11

In places like Sri Lanka and Sierra Leone, thousands of children who were used as soldiers have returned to their families and communities and may hope for a better future. Humanitarian Principles

At the Third Regular Session in 2003, the Board asked the Secretariat to clarify the humanitarian principles that guide WFP. At the First Regular Session in 2004, the Board endorsed the ten principles put forward by the Secretariat, and suggested a few amendments to the text. The Board asked the Secretariat to refer to other important bodies of law and the United Nations Charter. U.S. Department of Labor's 2003 Findings on the Worst Forms of Child Labor

The report provides individual profiles on 125 independent countries and a summary report on 19 non-independent countries and territories designated as GSP beneficiaries and/or beneficiaries under the CBTPA and AGOA. Wherever possible, these profiles focus on the worst forms of child labor, rather than on child labor in general. However, the profiles do not always make this distinction. First, some governments have not yet determined what constitutes a worst form of child labor in their country or territory under subparagraph (D) of ILO Convention 182.

The United Nations warned today that the crisis in Darfur, western Sudan, will worsen dramatically unless security there is immediately improved and humanitarian agencies have better access to those in need.
A UN mission which just completed a three-day visit to the area called on the Sudanese Government to accelerate its efforts to address control armed militias, provide security and protection for displaced people, and facilitate humanitarian access.

Sudan: UN warns of worsening situation in crisis-hit Darfur

KHARTOUM, May 1 (AFP) - The United Nations warned Saturday that the humanitarian crisis in west Sudan's Darfur region would worsen if measures to improve security and access were not taken immediately.

World Food Programme Executive Director James Morris told a press conference here that he had asked the Sudanese government to accelerate efforts to address the armed militias issue and to "provide security and protection to the people."

Morris returned early Saturday from Darfur where he led a high-level UN mission to assess the humanitarian situation there.

Sudan: UN confirms massive humanitarian crisis in Darfur, insists on improved security and access

(Khartoum - 1 May 2004) - The UN warned today that without immediately improved security as well as access for humanitarian agencies, the crisis in Darfur, western Sudan, will worsen dramatically.
The UN mission visited the three Darfur states from the 28-30 April and gathered first-hand information on the humanitarian situation in the region. It called upon the Government of Sudan to accelerate its efforts to address control armed militias, provide security and protection for displaced people and facilitate humanitarian access.
