UN humanitarian agencies in Syria request urgent access to affected populations in Rural Damascus

(Damascus, 12 June 2013) The United Nations is concerned about the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Rural Damascus where several locations are increasingly difficult to access. The UN estimates that there are over 1.2 million people in hard-to-reach areas in Rural Damascus in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

Communities in the Jerusalem periphery at risk of forcible transfer [EN/AR]

KEY FACTS

  • Around 2,300 Palestinians, two thirds of them children, reside in about 20 small herding communities in the hills east of Jerusalem, in Area C.

  • Over 80% of the residents are refugees, a status they acquired following their eviction from their place of residence in southern Israel in the early 1950’s.

  • The communities have gradually lost access to much of their grazing land due to settlement expansion.

Khartoum, 11 June 2013. The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Mr. Ali Al-Za’tari, expresses shock and sorrow at the killing of a staff member of a humanitarian nongovernment organisation on 9 June 2013 in North Camp, Nertiti, Central Darfur. Mr. Al-Za’tari offers his sincere condolences to the family of the staff member killed and urges the authorities concerned to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Revised Syria Humanitarian Assistance Response Plan (SHARP) January - December 2013

The events in Syria since March 2011 have resulted in significant humanitarian needs. Compared with the initial 2013 Syria Humanitarian Assistance Response Plan (SHARP), launched in December 2012, the crisis has further intensified and expanded into most parts of the country. Civilians across the country are bearing the brunt of the on-going violence with rising numbers of people killed, injured, displaced or otherwise affected in their living conditions.
