How do I make the most out of my job postings?
ReliefWeb's immensely popular Jobs section makes it an ideal place for your advertisements targeting humanitarian professionals. With 1,200 organizations posting 20,000 job announcements a year and more than 25,000 visits a day, you'll want to make sure that your announcements are seen by the right people, and that they are complete and accurate. So here are some tips that will help you create a perfect job announcement and attract the best candidates for your organization..
TITLE - Title should be short, clear, and concise highlighting the main function of the post. The title is what grabs job seekers’ attention and makes them want to find out more about the job. We also encourage using certain keywords which may include essential skills and targeted audience - e.g. Finance Officer, Fluent in French, DRC National.
CLOSING DATE - Double check the closing date, because if you accidentally select a date in the past, your ad will not be published. You can extend or close an ad at any time by simply modifying the closing date - no need to ask ReliefWeb editors to change the closing date.
JOB LOCATION - It’s very important that you select the country where the post is based (duty station), as most users filter their jobs search by location. Also, we have just introduced a new feature on our jobs form, which allows you to select "Unspecified" to refer to job locations that are home-based/remote, field deployments (roster/roving), and duty station yet to be determined. This new feature is located on the top right portion of the jobs form. The city field is optional, but strongly recommended, as it allows you to specify the city where the post will be based in.
ORGANIZATION - Would you apply for a job not knowing who is hiring? Probably not, so make sure you select your organization's name here. To prevent fraud, we do our best to make sure that we only publish job announcements from legitimate organizations. If your organization is not yet in our drop-down menu, an editor will contact you and ask for additional information on your organization before registering it on ReliefWeb.
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE - The years of experience filter is one of the most useful tools, as it enables job seekers to search for jobs that best fit their level of qualification, so make use you select the correct range of job experience to target the most suitable candidates.
JOB TYPE - Are you advertising for a job, a consultancy, an internship, or a voluntary opportunity? Let the job seekers know, so that they don't apply for a position they aren't interested in.
CAREER CATEGORIES AND THEMES - Please select the themes and/or career categories that actually apply to the position you want to fill, and not to the work of your organization as a whole. We encourage you to select only one most relevant career category as this leads to a more accurate job search for job seekers and potentially targeting the right candidates. Select only a theme if it is relevant to the function of the post regardless of the work of the organization as a whole. Otherwise, you may leave this blank as certain positions may not require a specific theme such as Finance, Administration, Human Resources.
JOB DESCRIPTION - Once you have grabbed job seekers’ attention from the job title, this is where they identify if they possess the right skill set, level of experience and qualifications so it it highly encouraged that you provide a background information on the organization or project, details of the duties and responsibilities of the position, and required skills and experience. You may also include salary, benefits and other information, as applicable. A clear and detailed job description is key to attracting the right candidates!
HOW TO APPLY - Finally, the “How to Apply” section needs to have all the necessary contact information with application instructions that are easy to follow. Do not forget to include either an email address or a link preferably directing job seekers to the specific job vacancy. Simplifying this process facilitates an easy application process for interested candidates!
