Disasters in China leave 7,844 people dead or missing in 2010

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Various kinds of disasters in China left 7,844 people dead or missing and affected a total of 430 million persons last year, according to a report issued by the Ministry of Civil Affairs on Thursday.

The disasters in 2010 also resulted in direct economic losses of 533.99 billion yuan (82.72 billion U.S. dollars), the report said.

The country witnessed multiple serious disasters, including the severe earthquake in Qinghai's Yushu and the landslide in Gansu's Zhouqu, the report said.

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Governments in Asia and the Pacific need to prepare for a large increase in climate-induced migration in the coming years, says a forthcoming report by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Typhoons, cyclones, floods and drought are forcing more and more people to migrate. In the past year alone, extreme weather in Malaysia, Pakistan, the People's Republic of China, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka has caused temporary or longer term dislocation of millions. This process is set to accelerate in coming decades as climate change leads to more extreme weather.

China's 2010 grain output expected to rise despite floods, drought

China's grain production will increase 15.6 billion kilograms to 546.4 billion kilograms this year as farmers' per capita net income grows 10 percent to 5,800 yuan (865.7 U.S. dollars), according to a statement released at the conclusion of the central rural work conference which concluded here Wednesday.

Deadly grassland fire put out in SW China, two critically injured

CHENGDU, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Fire fighters Monday put out a wild fire that raged for about 24 hours on a plateau grassland in southwest China's Sichuan Province, leaving 22 dead and four injured.

Two of the injured were critically ill, said Li Bing, a rescue official from the provincial health bureau.

He said the injured were sent to the provincial capital of Chengdu Monday for treatment.

Grassland fire in southwest China kills at least 22

CHENGDU, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A spreading grassland fire in a mountainous Tibetan region in southwest China proved deadly when it trapped soldiers and local residents trying to put out the blaze. By Sunday night, at least 22 have been killed and three severely burned, local officials said.

The wild fire was raging through a grassland atop a plateau some six kilometers from the county government seat in Daofu County, Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze, Sichuan Province. About
