BANGKOK, 28 June 2011 (IRIN) - Wildfires burn several hundred million hectares of vegetation around the world each year and appear to be growing in number and extent, but their impact on developing countries is particularly worrying, experts say.

Executive summary

The rapid increase in oil production coupled with the rise in world oil prices have been the main engine of economic growth of Kazakhstan after the transformational recession of 1990s that followed the independence. ALMATY, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Forest fires have killed five people in northern Kazakhstan, the country's Emergencies Ministry said on Thursday, as neighbouring Russia sent aircraft to fight blazes advancing onto its territory.

More than 500 firefighters were trying to contain the fires, which broke out at about noon (0600 GMT) on Wednesday

Wildfires destroy over 400 homes in Siberia

MOSCOW, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Wildfires swept through several villages in Siberia, burning down over 400 homes on Wednesday, Russia's Emergencies Ministry said, following a wave of blazes that killed over 50 people earlier in the summer.

No casualties were reported from the flames in the Altai region bordering Kazakhstan that followed wildfires which killed 54 in central Russia in July and August, during Russia's worst heat wave since records began 130 years ago.
