Israel wildfire: How it stacks up with five other devastating blazes

Israeli officials are racing to contain wildfires that began in northern Israel on Thursday morning, prompting the evacuation of 17,000 and a rare request for international assistance. But while these fires are devastating for Israel - as of Friday they've killed at least 42 people and burned an estimated 8,600 acres in the tiny country - they are far smaller than other major forest fires around the globe.

Special Report on forest fire and Haze situation in Indonesia and action taken

Since 28 February this year, satellite surveillance of Sumatra and Kalimantan indicated a significant increase in fire activity or hot spots in these areas, particularly in the provinces of Riau, North Sumatra and West Kalimantan. This activity is attributed to a short, hot, and dry spell, which created ideal burning conditions for land clearing activities. In Riau, North Sumatra and West Kalimantan these fires were located primarily on plantation and forestry company land. However, in West Sumatra, the majority of fires were identified as unregulated

Thick clouds hinder satellite imaging of Indonesia's fires

JAKARTA, March 21 (AFP) - Thick clouds have hindered satellite imaging of hot spots from forest fires in Indonesia's Sumatra and Borneo islands, officials said Tuesday.

Muchlisin Arief, the head of the weather sattelite imaging department of the Indonesian Aerospace Agency (LAPAN), said only one hot spot was detected in Riau in Sumatra and 38 in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo, on Monday but that fires might still be raging in both regions.

"That doesn't mean that the fires are gone, they just could not be detected," Arief told AFP.

Forest fires worsen haze on Indonesian Sumatra

Jakarta (dpa) - Forest fires continued to rage Saturday on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, blanketing the provincial centre of Riau with thick smoke and haze, according to a local report.

Residents of the provincial capital Pekanbaru wore masks to protect themselves from the smoke, which has caused throat irritations and other medical problems, the state-run Antara news agency reported.

As many as 500 forest fires - or hotspots - set earlier this month by plantation companies and farmers to clear land for cultivation, have been spotted by satellite images of Sumatra and Indonesian

Haze clears on Sumatra, but remains critical on Borneo

Jakarta (dpa) - Several days of rain on Indonesia's Sumatra island have dampened forest fires and reduced the dangerous levels of haze, but on the Indonesian portion of the island of Borneo fires have brought the haze to alarming proportions, it was reported on Monday.

The Antara news agency reported on Monday that in West Kalimantan province environmental protection authorities were concerned the effect the haze would have on the health of local residents.

The fires, deliberately caused by farmers and plantation owners to clear new land for crops, has caused haze that
