Capiz placed under state of calamity

ROXAS CITY, Capiz, Jan. 2 (PIA6) -- The flood-affected towns in Capiz have already been placed under the state of calamity.

In a session by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Capiz on December 28, towns and barangays were put under the state of calamity after these were affected by flood brought about by heavy rains due to typhoon Quinta.

NDRRMC exec director urges people to plant more trees

ILOILO CITY, Jan 2 (PIA6) -- “The mountains can no longer hold the water generated by rains because they lack trees cover or canopy,” said Undersecretary Benito Ramos, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director and Office of Civil Defense (OCD) administrator. People must plant more trees and sustain the activity as a long-term solution to flooding, he said.

DA to assist 'Quinta' affected farmers

ILOILO CITY, Jan 2 (PIA6) – Farmers whose crops were affected by tropical depression “Quinta” will receive assistance from the Department of Agriculture here.

In media interviews, DA-6 Executive Director Larry Nacionales said they are preparing appropriate interventions now after the agency has assessed the impact of “Quinta” on agriculture.

Nacionales said farmers whose rice crops were totally damaged will be given certified seeds from their stocks under the rice program.

Tropical Storm Wukong (as of 2 Jan 2013) - Location Map

31 July 2012 - Over 240,000 people were affected by Tropical Storm Wukong (referred to locally as Quinta) after it made landfall in the Philippines on 25 December 2012.
The storm left 20 people dead, three injured and four missing in five regions.

Office of Provincial Agriculturist -Aklan reports P209 M "Quinta" partial damage

KALIBO, Aklan, Dis. 29 (PIA6) -- The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) here reported an initial P209,857,300.73 damage on crops due to flood brought by Typhoon Quinta.

The report, which was submitted to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) covered the towns of Kalibo, Libacao, Banga, Numancia, Lezo, Malinao, Madalag and Ibajay.

The PDRRMC is still awaiting reports coming from the rest of Aklan’s 17 towns.

Philippine storm death toll rises to 20

MANILA, Dec 30, 2012 (AFP) - The death toll from a tropical storm that hit the central Philippines on Christmas Day has risen to 20, with more than 20,000 others left homeless, the government said Sunday.

More drowning victims as well as the body of an elderly man crushed by a fallen tree had been found on Panay island along with that of an electrocution victim, raising the number of dead by nine, the civil defence office said.

RDRRMC-6 asks President Aquino to declare WV areas in state of calamity

ILOILO CITY, Dec. 29 (PIA6) -- The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) passed a resolution requesting President Benigno S. Aquino III to declare a state of calamity in areas of Western Visayas adversely affected by typhoon “Quinta”.

The move was made by the council chaired by Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Regional Director Rosario T. Cabrera to hasten relief, rehabilitation and other response efforts for affected areas, families and individuals with the needed help from the national government.
