Summary:

CHF 20,874 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 30 October 2012 to support the Viet Nam Red Cross Society (VNRC) in implementing disaster response preparedness activities. VNRC was able to deploy its national disaster response team (NDRT) to provinces likely to be affected by Typhoon Son-Tinh when it was to make landfall in Viet Nam.

Teaching disaster preparedness in schools

MANILA, 28 November 2012 (IRIN) - The Philippines is making headway in integrating disaster preparedness into primary and high school curricula, say officials.

"The net effect of this is that children will actively become agents in saving themselves and others in cases of disaster," Office of Civil Defence chief Benito Ramos told IRIN in Manila. "The ultimate goal is zero casualties by making them [children] less vulnerable in such situations."

DPWH to install coconets in landslide-prone road section in Leyte

CARIGARA, Leyte, Nov 21 (PIA) -- Who would have thought that the bunot (coco husk/coco coir), a by-product of the coconut tree, has a far more useful thing than shining floors? The Department of Public Works-Region 8 is all set to install coconets, along a 20-kilometer (km) road stretch in Capoocan, Leyte following a major landslide in said road section.

Laguna Lake residents weather the storm

Laguna Lake, 13 November 2012 — Communities around Laguna Lake, just east of the capital, Manila, are still suffering from the aftermath of flooding from a succession of tropical storms, the latest of which, Typhoon Ofel, hit the country late last month.

"I can hear the waves crashing into the walls of our house [at night]", Helen, a 53-year old grandmother and long-time resident of Laguna, said while standing in the kitchen where lake water still splashed on her feet.

Natural disasters on Chinese mainland kill 24 in Oct.

BEIJING, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-four people were killed and another six went missing in natural disasters across China last month, official statistics showed on Thursday.

Figures released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National Committee for Disaster Reduction also showed that 2.82 million residents on the Chinese mainland were affected by disasters and 168,000 people were forced to relocate.

Last month, the country was hit by landslides, typhoons and frost.

MDRRMC recommends a state of calamity for flooded areas

BONIFACIO, Misamis Occidental, Nov. 8 (PIA) -- The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) here, has passed a resolution recommending to the Sangguniang Bayan (SB), the declaration of a state of calamity in areas greatly affected by the recent floods.

The floods was due to the heavy rains brought about by Typhoon Ofel, last October 24-25, causing the Usogan River to overflow and submerged the rice fields of at least seven barangays, namely: Lilo-an, Lower Usogan, Linconan, Tiaman, Bolinsong, D. Fernan and Digson.

Recent storm causes losses over VND7,000 billion

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Bui Ba Bong said at a meeting in Hanoi on November 2, that the ministry proposes that the Government supply 70 tonnes of vegetable and fruit seeds for affected localities to restore agricultural production.

The provinces that were most seriously damaged by the storm include Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Haiphong, Hai Duong, and Hung Yen. It is estimated that around 30-70 percent of rice fields and 70 percent of subsidiary crops in those areas have been ruined.

Typhoon Ofel damages in Bonifacio, Misamis Occidental estimated at P21.4 million

BONIFACIO, Misamis Occidental, Nov 7 (PIA) – At least P21.4 million worth of government projects and properties here were damaged due to the floods brought about by Typhoon Ofel from October 24 to 25.

Heavy rains caused the Usogan River to overflow destroying the flood control structure that led the water to change its course and subsequently turned the ricefields into a vast lake, Mayor Samson R. Dumajug said.

1.26 mln S China residents affected by Typhoon Son-Tinh

HAIKOU, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Son-Tinh, the 23rd typhoon of the year, has killed one person and left another six missing in south China's Hainan Province, as well as affected over 1.26 million others, local authorities said Thursday.

Rainstorms and heavy winds have forced 52,000 people to relocate thus far, according to the provincial civil affairs bureau.

The wind and rain have damaged 44,700 hectares of farmland and 1,320 houses, as well as caused direct economic losses of 990 million yuan (158.69 million U.S. dollars), the bureau said.

Viet Nam: Typhoon Son Tinh (No.8) Situation Report No. 2

I. Summary

  • On the night of 29th October, Typhoon Son-Tinh moved north-east and became tropical depresssion in Mong Cai district, Quang Ninh province.

  • A total of 11 people were killed or are missing as a result of the typhoon; a further 90 people were injured; 55,680 houses were damaged; more than 95,000ha of paddy rice and cash crops were damaged. An initial estimate of total damage is nearly US$2 billion.

  • Electricity and communication systems are being restored in Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh provinces.

Typhoon Son-Tinh wreaks havoc in south China

BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Son-Tinh, the 23rd typhoon of the year, wreaked havoc in south China, damaging crops, flattening houses and forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people.

Influenced by the typhoon, the island province of Hainan was pelted by heavy rains to rainstorms, coming along with force nine to ten gales, according to the Hainan Provincial Civil Affairs Bureau.

Northern region repairs typhoon damage

People in the northern region are rushing to repair the damage caused by Typhoon Son Tinh, where so far 12 have been reported dead or missing and 43 injured.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has sent a dispatch to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development asking to urgently resume electricity connections and all communication systems.
