Key messages

• Undertaking rapid and accurate assessments of humanitarian needs in the immediate aftermath of typhoons and seasonal storms which regularly hit the Philippines are a key priority.

• Such assessments make sure that the European Commission's humanitarian funding targets and reaches the most vulnerable groups of society who are least able to fend for themselves after a disaster: female-headed households, children, the elderly.

NATURAL DISASTERS IN 2012

After an intense year of natural disasters in 2011, countries in the Asia-Pacific region welcomed a reduction in the number of events in 2012. OCHA and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters recorded 93 natural disaster events in 2012, in which over 3,200 people were killed and more than 75 million people were affected. China and the Philippines experienced the most disasters in 2012.

DSWD receives P6.4M from Brunei Darussalam for victims of 'Sendong'

MANILA, Dec. 21 (PNA) -- A year after typhoon ‘Sendong’ hit Cagayan de Oro City on December 17, 2011, donations continue to pour in for the recovery of victims.

Recently, Social Welfare and Development Secretary Dinky Soliman received a check worth P6.4 million from Her Excellency Ambassador Malai Halimah Yussop of the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam for the construction of additional core shelters for typhoon ‘Sendong’ victims.

Japan Turns Over Houses to Typhoon Sendong victims in Cagayan de Oro City

Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe attended the turnover ceremonies of 70 shelters to displaced families in Cagayan de Oro City, one of the worst hit cities by typhoon Sendong (international code name Washi) that battered the country December last year. The ceremonies were held in Barangay Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City on October 18, 2012. Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman Richard Gordon, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC-Philippines) Head of Delegation Selvaratnam Sinnadurrai were also in attendance.

Red Cross grants housing units for Valencia flood evacuees

BAGONTA-AS, Valencia City (Bukidnon News/19 October) Almost every time the water level rises in the Pulangi River, the Escribanos of Purok 1A in Batangan, Valencia City have feared the worst, that they might be carried by floodwaters.

They live on a house at the river bank just across the Pulangi Bridge in the road to San Fernando town.

Red Cross 320 shelters for displaced families in Iligan City

Nearly one year since typhoon ‘Sendong’ swamped Iligan City in Lanao Del Norte, rendering homeless thousands of families, the Philippine Red Cross is ready to turn over on October 2 this year, 320 transitional shelters and starter kits to the worst hit families in Barangay Digkilaan in Iligan.

"These houses will bring back the lost hope and dignity of these families, many of whom are still struggling to get back to normalcy," said PRC Chairman Richard Gordon, adding, "It takes time to recover."
