MANILA, May 29 -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is constructing a new bridge to replace a typhoon-ravaged bridge in Isabela that has long been closed to traffic.

DPWH Region 2 Director Melanio C. Briosos said that works have started for the construction of 450-meter Pigalo Bridge located along Alicia-Angadanan-San Guillermo Road crossing Cagayan River in Barangay Pigalo, Angadanan, Isabela that was damaged by typhoons Pedring and Quiel in 2011.

HA NOI (VNS)— About 3,000 residents affected by floods in 2011 in Cuu Long Delta provinces An Giang and Dong Thap, were provided with new houses and water and sanitation facilities by a 12-month project funded by the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Department.

The US$1.33million project which started in August last year, helped provide 200 houses, 2,000 water filters and 1,000 stainless steel tanks to households.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) will provide Php 26.6 million worth of 'Alternatibong Pangkabuhayan' (Livelihood Recovery Program) to 1,850 families who were severely affected by typhoons Pedring and Quiel in Pampanga, Bulacan and Isabela.

This is the second phase of the 'Alternatibong Pangkabuhayan' provided by the Red Cross as part of its recovery program for disaster-stricken families.

Also called the ‘lean season’, this time is coming to an end for this year, but for close to 40,000 people in Khammuane province, central Laos, it would have been a lot tougher without help from WFP.

Of the 19 tropical cyclones that entered the Philippines’ territory in 2011, 10 of them brought significant destruction. Among them was Typhoon Nesat, which hit during the last week of September, and was immediately followed by Typhoon Nalgae, during the first week of October. The typhoons followed the same path and resulted in massive flooding in the Central and Northern Luzon Island.

LAGAWE, Ifugao, Sept. 20 (PIA) --The Japan Red Cross (JRC) recently completed the delivery of materials for the construction of houses destroyed by typhoons Pedring and Quiel last year.

Provincial Red Cross Ifugao Chapter Head Randy Blanco received the materials consisting of concrete posts, galvanized iron sheets, and other aggregate housing materials as shelter assistance of the JRC to the 43 families rendered homeless by past calamities in Banaue, Kiangan, Lagawe, and Lamut.

MADDELA, Quirino, June 19 (PIA) -- A total of 3,713 families and 1,624 students in the municipalities of Maddela and Nagtipunan who were affected by typhoons Pedring and Quiel in September last year were benefited by the rehabilitation projects of the Philippine Red Cross.

The projects which were recently turned over to the beneficiaries by PRC Chairman Richard Gordon include rehabilitation of health facilities and classrooms, health equipment and supplies, community health education, and basic disaster management trainings.
