Disaster description

Since 21 June 2011, Tropical Storm Meari has dumped heavy rains throughout the northern Philippines island of Luzon, including in the national capital region of Metro Manila, triggering flash floods that have affected at least 171,000 people (WFP, 24 Jun 2011).

As of 24 June 2011, at least 48,700 people have been evacuated at 23 evacuation centers in ALbay, Rizal, Zambales and NCR (Government, 24 Jun 2011).

Tropical Storm Meari hit China on 26 June 2011, with gales and downpours generated by Meari causing floods in 17 counties of three provinces on the east coast. The forecast suggests that the provinces of Shandong and Liaoning will get a break from the torrential rains on 29 June 2011 as Meari heads for the Korean Peninsula (Xinhua, 28 Jun 2011).

In Republic of Korea, as of 27 June 2011, at least nine people have been killed, mostly drowned in flooding as a result of the Tropical Storm (Thomson Reuters Foundation, 27 Jun 2011).

From 25 to 28 June 2011, Tropical Storm Meari affected most areas of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The typhoon brought a strong wind, heavy rain and tidal wave, claiming casualties and leaving more than 160 dwelling blocks destroyed and over 21,000 hectares of cultivated areas submerged, washed away and buried mainly in west coastal areas (Korean Central News Agency, 12 Jul 2011).
