USAID/OFDA Responds to the New Zealand Earthquake

On the afternoon of February 22, people in Christchurch, New Zealand, were going about their normal lunchtime routine when a magnitude 6.3 earthquake rattled the city, trapping people under collapsed buildings, causing extensive damage to the city center, and killing hundreds of individuals.

NZ aid to Tonga following Cyclone Wilma

New Zealand will help the Tonga Red Cross replenish their stocks of emergency supplies following Cyclone Wilma in January.

New Zealand's assistance will support the New Zealand Red Cross to work with their counterparts in Tonga to restock supplies used during the response to Cyclone Wilma.

"Cyclone Wilma cased damage to around 86 homes in the in the Ha'apai group and the Tongan Government has identified food security and the repair of schools and residential houses as priority areas," New Zealand's High Commissioner to Tonga, Dr Jonathan Austin said.

Tonga escapes the brunt of Cyclone Wilma

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says the people of Tonga have been lucky to escape major damage from Cyclone Wilma.

The Ha' apai group received the most damage with authorities sending out relief supplies.

Tonga: Tropical Cyclone Wilma threat eases

The threat from Tropical Cyclone Wilma is easing, with the storm moving out to the Pacific Ocean.

Forecasters at the Met Office in Fiji say Wilma no longer poses any great danger after moving away from the Fiji group of islands.

Senior forecaster Amit Singh has been tracking the cyclone's path.

"The Cyclone Wilma was located about 340 kilometres south west of Ono-i-Lau about 7am fiji time [on Wednesday] morning and is moving south south west about 20 knots away from the Fiji group," he said.

But the cyclone has left a trail of destruction.

Tropical Cyclone Wilma Situation Update #1, 26 January 2011

This report was issued by OCHA SRO Fiji. It covers the period from 23 January 2011 to 26 January 2011.

- TC Wilma was declared on 23 January 2011, and upgraded to a Category 4 cyclone on 26 January. TC Wilma passed over Samoa, before it skirted around the Vava'u Islands, Tonga and impacted the Ha'apai group of islands in Tonga on 25 January as a Category 3

- Initial unconfirmed reports from 4 islands in the Ha'apai group indicate substantial damage to root crops and fruit trees, and minor damage to dwellings and jetties. No reports of death or injury.

Cyclone Wilma causes damage in Tonga

Tropical Cyclone Wilma has reportedly caused major damage to Tonga's Ha'apai Island group.

The cyclone, which reached category three hit Tonga.

Earlier this week it caused damage in American Samoa removing roofs, cutting power, and forcing evacuations.

The threat from tropical cyclone Wilma has eased, with the storm moving out to sea.
