Disasters in China leave 7,844 people dead or missing in 2010

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Various kinds of disasters in China left 7,844 people dead or missing and affected a total of 430 million persons last year, according to a report issued by the Ministry of Civil Affairs on Thursday.

The disasters in 2010 also resulted in direct economic losses of 533.99 billion yuan (82.72 billion U.S. dollars), the report said.

The country witnessed multiple serious disasters, including the severe earthquake in Qinghai's Yushu and the landslide in Gansu's Zhouqu, the report said.

LANZHOU, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Floods caused by torrential rains and tropical cyclones have left at least 3,222 people killed and 1,003 others missing across China in the first eleven months of this year, government statistics released Tuesday show.

"In 2010, China experienced the worst flooding casualties and damage since 1998," Water Resources Minister Chen Lei said during a national drought and flooding relief workshop held in the northwest city of Lanzhou.

South China province to demolish risky dam

XINYI, Guangdong, Sept 28 (Xinhua) -- A dam, considered close to collapse, will be demolished in south China's Guangdong Province, provincial authorities said Tuesday.

The dam of the Qianfeng Hydraulic Power Plant in Xinyi City was severely damaged by floods triggered by typhoon Fanapi, and might collapse anytime, threatening tens of thousands of villagers, said Kuang Mingyong, spokesman for Guangdong' s water affairs authorities.

"Consolidation and repair work cannot solve the problem, it must be blown up," he said.

Death toll from Typhoon Fanapi rises to 54 in S China

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Floods, landslides and heavy downpours brought by typhoon Fanapi had claimed 54 lives in south China's Guangdong Province, while another 42 were missing, local authorities said Thursday.

Meanwhile, more than 1.16 million people were affected and 79,400 in low-lying areas were forced to be evacuated, the provincial flood control headquarters said in a statement.

BEIJING, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- The mainland-based Red Cross Society of China has donated 100,000 U.S. dollars to help relief efforts after typhoon Fanabi slammed Taiwan Sunday.

The Society also expressed their condolences to the Taiwanese people affected by Fanabi through Taiwan's Red Cross Society, a statement from the mainland-based Society said Thursday.

Taiwan clear up begins after typhoon flooding

Additional military typhoon aid to be deployed in Taiwan

China: Typhoon Fanapi lands on Fujian Province

Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon to hit China this year, struck southeast China's Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, according to Fujian provincial flood control headquarters.

Fanapi hit Gulei Township in Fujian's Zhangpu County, lashing the province's coastal areas with winds and torrential rains.

Powerful typhoon lashes Taiwan

TAIPEI - Taiwan was pounded by winds of more than 200 kilometres an hour Sunday as China evacuated 150,000 people, issuing an alert over what it said could be the fiercest typhoon of the year to hit the region.

Typhoon Fanapi made landfall at 8:40 am (0040 GMT) near Taiwan's east coast city of Hualien, packing gusts of up to 220 kilometres (137 miles) an hour after picking up speed, the Central Weather Bureau said.
