NEW DELHI, January 14, 2011 - More than one million people living in the coastal areas of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh are set to benefit from a program financed by the World Bank to provide $255 million to support the first phase of the Government of India's national program to mitigate the impact of cyclones.

WASHINGTON, DC, June 22, 2010 - The World Bank today approved a $255 million assistance for the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (I) (NCRMP-I) in support of the first phase of the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Program. The objective of the program is to help India mitigate the risks and vulnerability of its people to natural disasters, especially cyclones. The first phase is financed through a Credit from the IDA (International Development Association), complemented with $64 million from the Government's budget.

Heat wave bakes India before monsoon, dozens killed

NEW DELHI, May 27 (Reuters) - Temperatures close to 50 degrees Celsius gripped large swathes of India, killing dozens of people as the country waits for the annual monsoon rains to reach the mainland, media and officials said on Thursday.

HYDERABAD: Cyclone Laila on Friday weakened into a depression and further into a low pressure area while moving towards south Orissa even as the state government launched the task of rehabilitating about 75,000 displaced people and providing food and water to the thousands stranded in flood waters.

Despite the weakening of the system, the Met officials called for a vigil on the part of the government on Saturday as it predicted widespread rainfall over the north coastal Andhra and Telangana regions during the next 24 hours.

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh heaved a sigh of relief after cyclone Laila weakened ahead of landfall about 30 km from Bapatla in Guntur district on Thursday afternoon but still left 16 people dead, flooded thousands of homes, snapped power supply in many areas and threw rail and road traffic out of gear in the coastal region of the state.

NEW DELHI (AlertNet) - Tens of thousands of people need emergency aid after cyclone Laila battered India's eastern coast, inundating villages, smashing mud and thatch homes and wiping out vital cash crops, aid workers and government officials say.

Reaching wind speeds of up 95 kmph (59 mph) and accompanied by high tidal waves and heavy rains, Laila slammed the coast of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday afternoon, killing at least 17 people.

HYDERBAD: Cyclonic storm Laila remained stationary near south coastal Andhra Pradesh as heavy rains and gales continued to batter the region for the third consecutive day on Friday, killing 27 people and inundating towns and villages.

The transport system was paralysed and electricity and communication disrupted.

India cyclone weakens, death toll at 26

HYDERABAD - Cyclone Laila weakened Friday after battering India's southeastern coast with several days of torrential rain and high winds that claimed 26 lives, officials said.

The storm, which formed over the Bay of Bengal, drenched the southern state of Tamil Nadu before making landfall further north Thursday in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, where it uprooted trees, electricity poles and destroyed communication lines.

Andhra Pradesh disaster management commissioner T. Radha said more than 70,000 people evacuated ahead of the storm had been told to stay in shelters until Friday evening.
