Women Fight Blows from Climate Change with Sewing Machines and Eggs

VERAPAZ, El Salvador, Jun 6, 2012 (IPS) - Amanda Menjívar is moved by the sight of the 16 sewing machines donated to help a group of local women set up a sewing centre to get over the devastating effects of the disaster caused by Hurricane Ida in the Salvadoran town of Verapaz.

"We want to earn an income to help us get over the losses we suffered from those rains," Menjívar, 26, told IPS. She is leading the project, which is just getting off the ground.

A Review of the 2009 Tropical Storm Ida floods: IFRC-led Shelter Cluster in El Salvador

1 . BACKGROUND

During November 7 and 8, 2009, the passage of Tropical Storm Ida through Central America, which coincided with a low pressure system over the Pacific coast of El Salvador and Guatemala, caused heavy rainfall in El Salvador. Mudslides buried towns and overflowing rivers swept through different areas destroying water, electrical and telecommunications systems, damaging roads, health and educational centers and houses. Thus, the Salvadoran President decreed a state of national emergency on 8 November. 9,000 people were sheltered in 131 collective centers on Nov 8th.

Convenio fortalece cooperación en situaciones de emergencia en Nicaragua

La Secretaría Ejecutiva del Sistema Nacional para la Prevención, Atención y Mitigación de Desastres (SE-SINAPRED), el Ministerio de Hacienda y Crédito P=FAblico (MHCP) y el Programa Mundial de Alimentos (PMA) firmaron un convenio de colaboración para coordinar las acciones de atención a las familias afectadas por emergencias en Nicaragua.

El convenio fue firmado por el Vice Ministro de Hacienda y Crédito P=FAblico, Iván Acosta Montalván; el Secretario Ejecutivo de SINAPRED, Rafael Alfonso Ramírez, y el Representante del PMA, Helmut W. Rauch.

Habitat for Humanity El Salvador dedicates 50 houses to families affected by Ida

Habitat for Humanity El Salvador dedicated 50 permanent housing solutions to families affected by Tropical Storm Ida in the community of Brisas de Jiboa in San Vincente.

SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica (January 5) - Fifty families whose homes were devastated by Tropical Storm Ida in November of 2009 spent Christmas in a new, safe and adequate house. A total of 983 national and international volunteers had labored alongside the families to build the homes.

El pasado 7 y 8 de noviembre de 2009, El Salvador se vio seriamente afectado por los estragos ocasionados por "Ida", después de convertirse de tormenta tropical a huracán. San Vicente fue uno de los departamentos del país que más sufrió los impactos de las intensas lluvias.

Ayuda en Acción ha entregado canastas básicas alimentarias y kits de higiene personal a 220 familias afectadas de 7 comunidades del municipio de San Vicente, de las cuales 133 perdieron sus viviendas y 87 vieron como sus hogares resultaban seriamente dañados.

El Salvador: After Storms, Women Lead Village Reconstruction

Hurricane Ida left behind a trail of destruction when it slammed into El Salvador last November. In the town of Monte San Juan, women's groups are spearheading the reconstruction effort with the help of a programme that keeps their families fed. The project has helped women like Carmen Perez become community leaders.

MONTE SAN JUAN - Like many small farmers in Monte San Juan, Carmen Perez lost almost everything when Hurricane Ida tore through El Salvador in November. "My home was completely buried under the mud, and my corn and bean crops were both ruined," she says.

Mexico: Listos, Aeropuertos de ASA ante temporada de huracanes
