Caribbean Red Cross Program Transitions into Second Phase

A USAID/OFDA-supported Red Cross program to strengthen disaster preparedness in the Caribbean concluded its first phase in August and will begin phase two in October.

The program, "Readiness to Respond: Increased Disaster Preparedness through Enhanced Coordination and Community Awareness," is a joint effort between USAID/OFDA, the American Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and Caribbean Red Cross societies.

Hurricane Jimena survivors in Mexico receive emergency food aid

SILVER SPRING, Md. - After Hurricane Jimena struck Mexico's Baja California Peninsula in early September, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) launched an emergency response to distribute food items to hundreds of survivors in some of the most affected communities in the nation.

SANTIAGO, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Wednesday that the fight against hunger in Latin America went back when people suffering from hunger in the region went up from 45 million to 53 million.

In a statement published on Wednesday, FAO representative Jose Graziano da Silva said that the rise of food prices and the economic crisis took millions of people to a situation of food insecurity, and many affected countries do not have resources to address it.

Emergency aid airlifted to Mexico in Jimena's wake

Direct Relief today sent an air shipment, carried by partner group Aeromedicos, containing more than $11,000 (wholesale) worth of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals to the town of Mulege in Baja California Sur, Mexico, which was badly affected by Hurricane Jimena earlier this month.

Direct Relief's donation included antibiotics, primary care supplies, and nutritional products for adults and children. Aeromedicos volunteer pilots flew the consignment by private planes to Mulege. The materials will be used by volunteer U.S. doctors and health

Mexico gov't to compensate flood victims

MEXICO CITY, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Mexican government announced Friday it will pay 10 million pesos (750,000 U.S. dollars) to those who lost their homes due to the flood, which occurred earlier this week in central parts of the country.

Jimena hits Mexican mainland

MEXICO CITY, Sept 4, 2009 (AFP) - The remnants of what was once Hurricane Jimena lashed the northwestern Mexican mainland on Friday, blocking roads and cutting electricity and phone lines to two isolated towns, officials said.

Jimena was a Category Four hurricane -- the most powerful of 2009 -- shortly before making landfall on the Baja California peninsula Wednesday, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center. It has since weakened to Tropical Depression strength, but still packs a powerful punch.
