Puerto Rico: FEMA disaster deadline eight days away

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Only eight days remain for any resident who had property damages or other losses as a result of the recent floods that occurred from September 21 - October 3, 2008, to register for Commonwealth-federal disaster assistance.

Over $23 million in disaster aid approved for Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Federal and Commonwealth recovery officials announced today that more than $23 million in disaster aid has been approved for Puerto Rico residents in the form of grants to cover damages related to severe storms and flooding which occurred from September 21 to October 3, 2008.

Below is an update of disaster recovery activities through the close of business on Thursday, December 4, 2008.

- 37,032 households and business owners have registered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

- $23,092,140 in grants has been approved

Puerto Rico: Five disaster recovery centers to close on December 6

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials announced today, that the Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC's) in the municipalities of Peñuelas, Villalba, Santa Isabel, Guayama and Las Piedras will cease operations at the close of business Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.

The DRC's have served residents and businesses affected by the severe storms and flooding from September 21 to October 3, 2008 and are located at:

USA: Disaster aid passes $1.2 million

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- More than $1.2 million in grants for disaster aid has been given to Puerto Rico individuals and households by the federal and commonwealth governments, disaster officials announced today.

The assistance is available to homeowners, renters and businesses in 19 municipalities, mostly across the southern half of the island.

This update expands the 2008 omnibus appeal for U.S. Hurricane, which includes CWS responses to Hurricanes Dolly, Fay, Gustav, Ike and Kyle.

Situation

The 11th named storm of a busy hurricane season, Hurricane Kyle flooded homes and businesses in the Caribbean before heading north and dissipating. As many as six people were killed in Puerto Rico, where remote communities are still coping with flooding and landslides. USA: President declares major disaster for Puerto Rico

The head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced that federal disaster aid has been made available for the commonwealth of Puerto Rico to help people and communities recover from the effects severe storms and flooding beginning on September 21, 2008, and continuing.
