Call for proposals: Canada Caribbean Disaster Risk Management (CCDRM) Fund

The Canada Caribbean Disaster Risk Management (CCDRM) Fund announces the third call for project proposals. Grants will be made on a competitive basis to support small-scale projects at the community level that deliver measurable results in natural disaster risk reduction and/or in the reduction of the negative impacts of climate change. Projects may range in duration from a few months to two years in maximum duration.

Priority will be given to projects in the $25,000 to $75,000 CDN range. Projects outside this range may be considered

Cruz Roja Mexicana tiene listos a sus 29 mil voluntarios para apoyar en cualquiera de los estados del país que pudiera resultar afectado por la temporada de huracanes que ya comenzó, y de la cual se espera que durante julio a noviembre se registren 25 fenómenos naturales.

Red Cross ready for 2009 hurricane season

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies (IFRC) is encouraging the people of the Caribbean to become 'Red Cross ready' for the 2009 hurricane season which officially starts today, June 1st and ends on November 30th.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasters say the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be near-normal. However, the IFRC is advising the public to prepare for the possibility of being hit by a storm.

- Belize suffered considerable damage from two tropical systems during the 2008 hurricane season. Tropical storm Arthur in late May and heavy rains from a tropical depression in late October resulted in massive flooding across Belize and loss of lives and property. Damage to housing and infrastructure together with losses of output and export earnings and increases in imports, are estimated at 4.8 percent of GDP.

Ground-breaking ceremonies were held in Hope Creek Village on Monday, August 11, 2008 for a housing construction project to relocate a number of residents in the Stann Creek District who were recently affected by flooding caused by Tropical Storm Arthur.

Guatemala: Multilateral contribution, 08 Aug 2008

Rome August 8, 2008 - "The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Directorate General for Cooperation and Development has contributed with a financial amount of 192.000 euros to FAO in response to urgent humanitarian assistance in Guatemala.
